Job summary

Tides is seeking a Senior Counsel, Philanthropy, to provide expert legal support across charitable exempt organizations, grants, and investments. This role advises executives, vets new programs, negotiates complex contracts, and maintains compliant policies within a cross-functional team.

Ideal candidates hold a JD with California license, show strong communication, and possess a proven ability to mitigate risk in nonprofit settings while guiding organizational governance and fiduciary

Qualifications

• Juris Doctor and California law license or in-house counsel eligibility are required.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential.
• Demonstrated risk assessment and mitigation in nonprofit legal contexts.
• Experience advising charitable organizations and grantmaking.
• Ability to lead cross-departmental legal initiatives without formal supervision.

Responsibilities

• Serve as an authoritative internal resource on charitable exempt organization law within assigned portfolio.
• Advise executive leadership on complex legal grantmaking and investment questions.
• Lead legal vetting of new services and programs for Tides Foundation.
• Review and negotiate contracts and grant agreements; develop legal templates and policies.
• Respond to subpoenas and external inquiries; coordinate with outside counsel.
