Job summary

Newport Healthcare seeks a seasoned Counsel, Litigation and Employment to drive legal strategy across employment, litigation, and insured claims. You will advise senior leadership, coordinate with HR, Compliance, Operations, and outside counsel, and lead risk mitigation and policy development.

You will report to the Chief Legal and Development Officer and shape enterprise-wide compliance with employment laws and regulatory standards while ensuring accountable, resilient operations.

Qualifications

• J.D. from an accredited law school and licensed to practice in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
• 5+ years of legal experience in employment law, litigation, and/or risk management.
• Experience supporting HR through training, policy development, and counsel.
• Knowledge of wage/hour issues, investigations, and agency claims, workers’ compensation.

Responsibilities

• Provide day-to-day legal advice on a broad range of employment and labor law issues, including hiring, discipline, leave management, terminations, wage and hour compliance, and workplace accommodations.
• Monitor evolving employment law and healthcare regulatory requirements and provide updates and training to HR and leadership teams.
• Ensure compliance with federal/state/local employment laws and regulations, including FMLA, CFRA, FEHA, FLSA, ADA, and Title VII.
• Advise on labor relations and union matters, including collective bargaining agreements and grievance procedures.
• Lead or support investigations involving employee complaints, harassment, discrimination, and policy violations.
• Manage internal and external litigation matters, coordinating with outside counsel on strategy, discovery, and holds.
• Provide oversight on insured claims (workers’ comp, auto, professional liability, EPLI) and coordinate defense with third-party admins.
