Job summary

Cleveland Clinic is seeking a Senior Counsel in Labor & Employment to join the Law Department at the Cleveland Clinic Administrative Campus in Beachwood.

This role provides complex labor and employment counsel, mentors staff, and collaborates with outside counsel, with optional remote work for Ohio or Florida residents and occasional travel.

Qualifications

• Juris Doctor Degree (J.D.) from ABA-accredited law school.
• Over ten years of Labor and Employment experience, in both law firm and in-house settings.
• Member in good standing of the state bar or ability to become member within a reasonable period of time.
• Ability to exercise independent judgment and discretion to perform legal services.

Responsibilities

• Provide timely legal advice on Labor and Employment matters within the practice group.
• Advise, mentor and guide attorneys and staff.
• Delegate matters when necessary.
• Participate in budget processes and manage outside counsel on relevant matters.
• Maintain expertise in Labor and Employment law.

As Senior Counsel, you will support Labor and Employment law within Cleveland Clinic through direct legal practice and the supervision of internal staff and outside counsel.

A caregiver in this role works remotely in Ohio or Florida, Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., requiring occasional travel.

To be considered for this position, caregivers must reside in Ohio, Nevada, or Florida.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:

• Ensure that timely responses are provided to requests for legal advice Labor and Employment whether by Senior Counsel or by other members of the pertinent practice group.
• Advise, mentor and guide attorneys and other staff members working within Labor and Employment.
• Delegate matters when necessary.
• Participate in budget processes and manages outside counsel on matters falling within Labor and Employment in a cost-effective manner.
• Maintain expertise in Labor and Employment law.
• Advise and train appropriate members of the department on legal developments impacting Labor and Employment.
• Actively seek out opportunities to bring the organization into compliance with those areas of the law.
• Other duties as assigned.

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

• Juris Doctor Degree (J.D.) from ABA accredited law school
• Over ten (10) years of comparable experience in Labor and Employment law, preferably in both a law firm as well as an in-house setting
• Member in good standing of the state bar or ability to become a member of the state bar within a reasonable period of time
• Ability to exercise independent judgment and discretion to perform legal services

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

• Three to five years of successful experience leading internal staff as well as outside counsel
• Two years of experience in a healthcare setting
• Five or more years specializing in the area of labor and employment law, inclusive of counseling, employment contracts, administrative charges before the EEOC and state agencies, and employment litigation
• Five or more years of direct experience in traditional private sector labor matters, including negotiation of labor contracts, handling mediations/arbitrations/unfair labor practice charges, and advising on issues arising under the NLRA

Physical Requirements

• Ability to perform work in a stationary position for extended periods.
• Ability to travel throughout the hospital system.
• Ability to operate a computer, audio visual and other office equipment.
• Ability to communicate and exchange accurate information, including the ability to deliver training in person and virtually.
