Job summary

Transamerica is seeking an attorney to join our Legal Counsel team, primarily supporting the Employee Benefits division focusing on life insurance products and regulatory compliance.

You will provide strategic legal guidance, draft and negotiate contracts, and collaborate with compliance to mitigate risk. Preference for candidates near Baltimore, Cedar Rapids, Denver, or Philadelphia offices, but remote candidates will be considered.

Qualifications

• JD from an ABA-accredited law school.
• Bar admission in good standing in any US jurisdiction.
• Five years of experience in a sophisticated law firm or in-house counsel with insurance regulatory focus.
• Experience with life, health, or employee benefits insurance and ERISA.
• Excellent written and oral communication; strong judgment in fast-paced environments.
• Ability to adapt and collaborate in a large corporate setting.
• Proficient in MS Office.

Responsibilities

• Provide legal advice and support in the development, filing, offering, and administration of life insurance products and services for our Employee Benefits division.
• Draft, review, and negotiate contracts including marketing, distribution, administration, TPA, and vendor agreements for senior team members.
• Counsel on regulatory challenges such as state insurance requirements, ERISA preemption, and benefits coordination.
• Advise on legal risks and potential impacts of business decisions; address escalated claims and consumer complaints.
• Monitor regulatory changes and interpret related laws and regulations for the business.
• Support Transamerica’s Life Insurance division as needed.
• Draft regulatory responses, disclosures, and other market conduct communications for senior review.
• Collaborate with internal compliance teams to implement policies mitigating legal risk.
• Tackle complex issues requiring multi-factor evaluation.
