Walmart is seeking a Senior Counsel to provide strategic legal guidance across HIPAA and health privacy matters. You will lead privacy risk programs, draft policies, and negotiate health data contracts in collaboration with compliance, product, and technology teams.

The role supports Walmart’s Health & Wellness initiatives from multiple offices and requires strong in‑house experience and cross‑functional leadership.

Qualifications

• JD from an accredited law school.
• Licensed to practice law in at least one state.
• 5 years’ experience in law.
• In‑house experience strongly preferred.

Position Summary

As Senior Counsel, you will provide strategic legal guidance to support business objectives, promote compliance with regulatory requirements, and mitigate risks across multiple operational areas. This role involves advising on complex legal matters, supporting contract development and the product lifecycle, and collaborating with internal and external stakeholders to implement effective legal strategies. Your expertise will contribute to informed decision-making and the achievement of Walmart’s business goals in a dynamic environment, while fostering a culture of integrity and ethical conduct.

This position can be based in our Bentonville, AR; Washington, DC; or San Bruno, CA office.

About the team

The Senior Counsel will join Walmart’s Health & Wellness legal team, providing expert guidance on HIPAA, state health privacy laws, and evolving health data regulations. This team supports innovation within a highly regulated environment by delivering strategic legal advice and risk mitigation. Collaborating closely with HIPAA Compliance and Security, business partners, and Law Department colleagues, the team helps shape privacy and data use strategies across health platforms and services. It fosters a culture of integrity, continuous learning, and operational excellence to advance Walmart’s mission in health-related initiatives.

What you’ll do

• Lead health data privacy risk identification and mitigation, developing compliance programs and frameworks with cross-functional partners.
• Advise on AI and health data issues, including data provenance, algorithmic decision‑making involving PHI, and AI governance.
• Support breach response and regulatory reporting.
• Draft and negotiate health data and services contracts.
• Develop privacy policies, playbooks, and training materials.
• Partner with compliance, product, and technology teams on emerging health privacy and AI legislation.

What you’ll bring

• Deep knowledge of federal and state health privacy laws.
• Extensive experience providing legal advice and developing risk mitigation strategies.
• Familiarity with AI applications in healthcare, including data provenance, training, and privacy protections.
• Experience advising on compliance programs and data protection strategies.
• Strong contract drafting and negotiation skills.
• Exceptional communication skills with the ability to translate complex legal concepts into clear, actionable guidance for non-legal stakeholders.
• Strategic, business‑oriented thinker with bias toward timely, decisive action and ability to balance legal risk with business objectives.
• Comfort operating in fast‑moving, ambiguous environments with multiple competing priorities.
• Proven collaborator across product, engineering, and business teams.
• Experience leading cross‑functional initiatives.

San Bruno, California US-08848 | Washington, District of Columbia US-10991: The annual salary range for this position is $169,000.00 - $338,000.00 Additional compensation includes annual or quarterly performance bonuses. Additional compensation for certain positions may also include :
