OpenAI is seeking a counsel to lead legal responses to cybersecurity and AI safety incidents. You will advise on complex issues, coordinate with Security, Safety, Product, and Engineering, and help shape the legal framework for incident handling.

The role requires a JD and license, 5+ years of relevant experience, and the ability to translate technical findings into actionable legal guidance. Hybrid work in Washington, D.C. or San Francisco with relocation support.

Qualifications

• Juris Doctor degree and an active license to practice law.
• 5+ years of experience managing cybersecurity or privacy incident responses at a tech company, law firm, or government agency.
• Ability to translate technical findings into practical legal advice.
• Strong written and verbal communication under time pressure.

Responsibilities

• Lead legal responses to cybersecurity and AI safety incidents, coordinating fact development and legal analysis.
• Manage outside counsel and third-party engagements essential to incident response.
• Serve as a primary Legal contact for cross-functional teams and communications.
• Advise on notification and reporting obligations with Privacy, Product, and Regulatory teams.
• Develop severity-based escalation criteria and incident response playbooks.
• Contribute to post-incident reviews and continuous improvement of safeguards.
