Job Description

KDG Construction Consulting

is seeking a Senior Cost Estimator to join our team. The Senior Cost Estimator will prepare pre-design cost estimates based on scope and project type, as well as construction cost estimates from drawings, outlines, and specifications on various project types. The role also includes reviewing contractor and consultant cost proposals and negotiating change orders.

Responsibilities and Duties:
  1. Prepare independent cost estimates to support projects during planning, design, and construction phases.
  2. Prepare and review final engineer’s estimates, considering factors such as phasing, airport operations, shifts, resources, time constraints, and badging impacts.
  3. Develop detailed and independent cost estimates from conceptual information and engineering drawings.
  4. Create detailed estimates including labor hours, material costs, and equipment costs.
  5. Provide constructability reports to identify deficiencies and ambiguities, assisting the project team in developing credible cost budgets.
  6. Reconcile independent estimates with third-party estimates, engaging in collaborative discussions and communicating results.
  7. Analyze bids from vendors, contractors, and subcontractors, aligning them with independent estimates.
  8. Identify factors influencing production costs and necessary field equipment.
  9. Present estimates to management and stakeholders.
  10. Review material take-offs and prepare detailed breakdowns of estimate components.
  11. Evaluate historical cost data for future estimates.
  12. Review contract documents and modifications to determine scope and cost implications.
Change Order Negotiations:
  1. Review contractor change order claims and negotiate resolutions.
  2. Assess proposals for merit and scope accuracy.
  3. Conduct weekly review meetings and document outcomes.
  4. Verify scope, labor rates, and material pricing against standards and references.
  5. Ensure contractor mark-ups are appropriate and within caps.
  6. Document negotiations and provide independent estimates.
  7. Coordinate with project management and engineering teams and prepare reports.
Required Qualifications:
  • 20+ years of estimating experience in engineering and construction projects.
  • Experience with complex estimate reconciliations and change order negotiations.
  • Proven ability to obtain and compare estimates from vendors/contractors.
  • Thorough knowledge of construction processes and industry practices.
  • Results-oriented, self-starter attitude.
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Ability to collaborate across departments and work in a team environment.
  • Detail-oriented and highly organized, capable of managing multiple projects.
  • Experience working with agencies such as FAA, LADBS, LADWP, etc.
Education/Training:
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or related field.
  • Certified estimating professional credential required.
Salary Range:

$198,000 - $205,000, based on qualifications and experience.
