Job summary

Summary

The Copy Editor conducts thorough reviews and makes edits (including rewrites) on large volumes of text for a variety of multimedia communications materials. The Copy Editor reviews nearly every printed piece, display panel, display interactive, video caption, banner, sign and other collateral material produced by Communications Services. The Copy Editor must review and correct material for accurate style, spelling, punctuation, grammar and content. The Copy Editor also identifies flaws in focus, structure, organization and tone in copy, and rewrites or makes suitable recommendations for correction. The Copy Editor works independently, replying upon sound judgment, knowledge and experience to make corrections, and must be able to perform work under pressure and adhere to tight deadlines.

What You'll Do
  • Reviews varied content for printed publications, displays, videos and the Web, including but not limited to body copy, headlines, captions, design inconsistencies, indentation and other formatting issues, etc. Applies knowledge of spelling, grammar, punctuation, AP and SRP style manuals, and other tools to make edits or rewrite the copy to ensure that it is clear, concise and correct. Ensures that graphic elements adhere to SRP standards. Conducts research to ensure that copy is factually correct, including but not limited to financial indicators, job titles, historical data, marketing offers, etc. Identifies flaws in focus structure, organization and tone in copy, and rewrites or makes suitable recommendations for correction.
  • Communicates with Corporate Communications Strategists, Marketing Communications Strategists, Graphic Designers, Digital Media Producers and various other internal and external business partners about necessary copy or formatting changes and the reasons for them.
  • Acts as a liaison between Communications Services staff and business partners to ensure that edits are accurately completed before production.
Education

A bachelor's degree relevant to the assignment from an accredited institution is preferred.

Experience

This position may be filled at one of three levels outlined below, based on the candidate’s relevant education, experience, or a combination of both that demonstrates the required knowledge, skills, and competencies. Level I — Associate: In lieu of a degree, 4 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience totaling 4 years may be considered. Level 2 – Journey: Minimum 2 years of relevant experience required. In lieu of a degree, 6 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience totaling 6 years may be considered. Level 3 – Senior: Minimum 5 years of relevant experience required. In lieu of a degree, 9 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience totaling 9 years may be considered. Eligibility for advancement (progression) to the next level in the same role is based on overall job performance, mastery of all functional responsibilities, and time in position, as assessed by the supervisor.

Additional Requirements And Qualifications

The Copy Editor often reviews material of a confidential nature, including customer, financial and employee information, and must be relied upon to not divulge content under any circumstances.

Hybrid Workplace

SRP currently offers a hybrid workplace, which allows employees whose jobs can be performed remotely, and who have sufficient technical capability, to telework up to three days per week. Although teleworking is available, all employees must live and work in Arizona.
