Job Summary

The Senior Controls Engineer manages all controls aspects of existing and new machinery and equipment to meet business plan requirements.

Responsibilities

  1. Lead efforts regarding the application of machine code throughout the plant.
  2. Lead troubleshooting of controls issues on machinery and equipment.
  3. Lead development and implementation of new controls systems required for new equipment and continuous improvement projects.
  4. Support new product introductions (phase-ins/phase-outs) and engineering/revision changes as it impacts controls systems on equipment within the plant.
  5. Track and maintain all PLC/Controls codes.
  6. Lead efforts to upgrade and improve PLC controls and operations.
  7. Lead bar code system implementation and maintenance throughout the plant.
  8. Lead MES and SQL Server Database implementation and maintenance of existing and new systems.
  9. Support process and machinery capability studies and equipment installations.
  10. Support validation of all new and modified processes.
  11. Participate when required in PFMEA and work instruction reviews.
  12. Ensure that equipment meets all applicable industry electrical standards.
  13. Identify and implement continuous improvement projects (e.g., cost reduction, efficiency improvement).
  14. Lead controls specification development and review of electrical drawings for new machinery and equipment and modifications to existing machinery and equipment.
  15. Support weekend work and off-shift work when required.
  16. Support the production operator.
  17. Travel to equipment integrator sites when required.
  18. Maintain a safe and clean working environment.
  19. Adhere to federal and state regulations.
  20. Adhere to all company policies, processes, and procedures.
  21. Performs other duties as requested, directed, or assigned.
  22. Predictable and reliable attendance.

Position Qualifications

  1. Bachelors degree in electrical or controls engineering or equivalent experience.
  2. Minimum of five (5) years of control engineering experience in a manufacturing facility.
  3. Expert working knowledge of PLC, HMIs, relays, contactors, servos, steppers, low voltage circuits, high voltage circuits, torque drivers, bar code systems, database storage, vision systems, etc.
  4. Ability to effectively program the following types of software: Allen Bradley, Ignition, Keyence sensors/cameras, SQL (plus), Fanuc robots, AutoCAD Electric.
  5. Experience with quality management systems.
  6. Experience with bar code systems.
  7. Working knowledge with machine electrical cabinet layout and machine controls.
  8. Work as a team player.
  9. Experience with TS 16949 and ISO 14001.
  10. Computer skills including Microsoft Office.

Physical Requirements / Working Conditions

  2. Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer in both an office and industrial environment.
  3. Constantly operates a computer and other office equipment.
  4. Ability to adjust focus, especially due to concentration on a computer screen.
  5. May need to lift and carry up to 30 pounds and/or position the body to reach items on the floor/below knee level or reach overhead.
  6. The person in this position needs to frequently move about in industrial environments.
  7. Works in a temperature-controlled office environment and in industrial environments where safety shoes and safety glasses are mandatory.
  8. The noise level in the work environment can be moderately loud.
  9. Works in an environment with high voltage electricity present on the manufacturing lines which may require the use of personal protective equipment to protect the safety of the person.
  10. May be required to recognize small numbers, letters, symbols, colors on prints, and/or operate field instruments/equipment.
  11. May be required to travel to and navigate a variety of sites to fully understand material needs.
  12. Must be able to manipulate equipment for calibration and modification.
  13. Must be able to bend, lift, stretch, stoop, push, pull, stand, and carry as needed to inspect, service, and operate machinery, equipment, and gauges.
  14. Visual acuity to read instructions, operate machines, and inspect parts produced.
  15. The ability to respond quickly to sounds.
  16. The ability to see and respond to dangerous situations.
  17. The ability to wear personal protective gear correctly most of the day.
