Job summary

Professional Alternatives is seeking a seasoned Controller for a Houston-based commercial real estate portfolio. You will oversee accounting, financial reporting, and project costing across multiple projects, while leading a team of 3–5 accounting professionals.

The role requires 8+ years in CRE accounting, strong GAAP knowledge, and experience with Yardi/MRI and QuickBooks. You will partner with operations and senior leadership on budgeting, forecasting, and strategic planning.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of progressive commercial real estate development and/or construction accounting experience.
• Strong knowledge of GAAP and accounting practices specific to the real estate industry.
• Experience with real estate accounting platforms such as Yardi, MRI, or similar systems.
• Advanced QuickBooks knowledge.
• Strong understanding of project accounting, job costing, and financial reporting.
• Ability to partner with development and project management teams on financial matters.
• Advanced Microsoft Excel skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office.
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.

Responsibilities

• Oversee accounting and financial reporting for a portfolio of commercial real estate projects.
• Manage full-cycle financial reporting and analysis, including financial statements, project reporting, covenant reporting, and job costing.
• Lead, manage, and mentor a team of 3–5 accounting professionals.
• Oversee project draws, payments, and subcontractor compliance.
• Partner with senior leadership on financial planning and business decisions.
• Work closely with operations, property management, development, and executive leadership.
• Support budgeting, forecasting, and strategic financial planning for individual projects.
• Oversee bi-weekly payroll.
• Identify and implement improvements to accounting processes and project reporting.
• Coordinate with external tax professionals and auditors to ensure accurate and complete financial information.
• Provide accounting and financial guidance to development and project management teams.
