Job summary

Whitman, Requardt & Associates, LLP in Richmond, VA is seeking experienced Construction Inspectors to join our growing team.

The Inspector will manage daily construction management and inspection for transportation projects, reading plans, ensuring contract compliance, and coordinating with engineers and owners.

Candidates should have six years of field inspection experience, VDOT certifications, and strong communication skills; a valid driver's license is required.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of six years of field construction inspection experience.
  • Experience in roadway/bridge construction and pavement rehabilitation.
  • VDOT materials certifications including Asphalt, Concrete, Soils and Pavement Marking.
  • A valid driver's license required and clean driving record.
  • Bachelor's degree desirable; strong reading/interpreting plans needed.
  • Must be able to read/interpret plans and specifications; good communication.

Responsibilities

  • Construction management and daily inspection of Contractor work.
  • Prepare daily/weekly reports and inspection logs.
  • Review pay estimates for accuracy with Contractor.
  • Maintain documentation and as-built drawings; assist with changes.
  • Ensure contract compliance and coordination with Engineer and Owner.

We are looking for experienced Construction Inspectors to join our growing team.. We are constantly winning new contracts and are looking for new inspectors to staff these projects.

We have immediate openings in the Richmond area for qualified transportation Construction Inspectors. The Inspector is responsible for managing and performing daily construction management and inspection services for various types of VDOT and locality transportation projects. Must have significant experience in roadway/bridge construction, have VDOT certifications, be proficient at reading and interpreting plans, specifications, and shop drawings as well as overseeing construction document controls and enforcing contract compliance.

Responsibilities:

Duties and responsibilities may include:

  • Construction management
  • Performing field inspection of Contractor's operations to see that they comply with contract documents
  • Preparing daily and weekly reports on work accomplished by Contractor
  • Performing materials testing and maintaining testing logs
  • Reviewing periodic pay estimates for accuracy with Contractor
  • Preparing sketches and assembling data for Engineer's use in making changes to the project
  • Keeping diaries and making reports on work accomplished and/or noted deficiencies
  • Performing sophisticated, complicated mathematical calculations
  • Reviewing Contractor schedules including initial CPM and monthly updates
  • Communicating effectively with the Engineer, Owner and Owner's operational and field staff on a regular basis, keeping them apprised of field conditions and maintaining active communications and excellent rapport with the Owner and the entire project team throughout the construction process

Requirements:

  • Minimum of six (6) years of specific field construction inspection experience in the specified areas listed below.
  • Inspection Skills
    • Applicants must have demonstrated inspection and management experience with roadway and bridge construction, utility construction, and related pavement rehabilitation projects requiring monitoring a contractor's work for conformance to the design plans, specifications and general permit requirements
    • Experience in coordinating inspection duties with multiple simultaneously operating crews
    • Experience tracking daily quantities, completing daily inspection reports, performing monthly estimates and as-built drawings.
  • Additional Training or Certifications -VDOT materials certifications including Asphalt, Concrete, Soils and Aggregate and Pavement Marking. ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician Grade I certification desired. Erosion & Sediment control certification (i.e., DCR Inspector's Certification) and Intermediate Work Zone Safety/ATSSA TCS
  • Applicant must have a valid driver's license and clean driving record
  • High School Diploma or State Equivalency Certificate. Bachelor's Degree or other advanced certificate desirable
  • Must have good communication skills
  • Must be able to read/interpret plans and specifications
  • Writing and drawing skills are necessary to complete inspection reports and documentation
  • Basic computer skills (Word & Excel) are desirable

Physical Requirements (Essential Functions):

This position requires the ability to perform a variety of physical tasks in the field as part of the essential job functions. Duties may include:

  • Walking and navigating across rough or uneven terrain such as mud, rocks, grass, dirt, steep hillsides, heavily wooded areas, and other unpaved surfaces
  • Moving around active project sites, which may involve climbing ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, or poles
  • Performing physical activities such as bending, twisting, kneeling, and climbing
  • Remaining in a stationary position—either standing or sitting—for extended periods of time
  • Repetitive motions involving the wrists, hands, and/or fingers
  • Lifting objects weighing up to 50 pounds and/or carting objects up to 50 lbs distances up to100 yards.
  • Driving to and from project sites which may involve distances of up to or exceeding 120 miles round trip.
  • Must be able to function safely in an environment with potential risks, including, but not limited to those described in this document.
  • Work from heights exceeding 6 feet
  • Must be able to wear a properly fitted safety harness and be knowledgeable of the correct use and of regular inspection of the harness and components
  • Must be willing to work nights and overtime, when required by the project assignment

The work environment may include exposure to a range of environmental conditions, including high and low temperatures, precipitation, and other outdoor elements. Work may also be performed in noisy conditions or confined/enclosed spaces.

The expected compensation range for this position is $70,000.00 - $135,000.00. This range represents a good faith estimate for this position. The specific compensation offered to a candidate may vary based on factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s relevant knowledge, training, skills, work location, and/or experience.
