Job summary

BIG Construction in Chicago is seeking an Assistant Controller to strengthen and scale our accounting function as we grow. This hands-on leadership role ensures financial accuracy, supports operational decision-making, and builds scalable processes across the business.

You will partner with the VP, Finance and Administration, project teams, and cross-functional leaders to bring clarity to our financials, drive timely close, improve job costing, billing, and reporting, and mentor the accounting

Qualifications

• 7–12+ years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in construction.
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance.
• Strong understanding of construction accounting, including job cost, WIP, and billing.
• Experience owning or heavily supporting month-end close.
• Experience with payroll processing, including union environments (preferred).
• Ability to analyze financial data and translate it into clear insights.
• Proficiency in Excel and financial analysis.
• Strong attention to detail with a process-oriented mindset.
• Ability to prioritize and manage multiple responsibilities effectively.

Responsibilities

• Lead and manage monthly close processes ensuring GL integrity.
• Oversee project accounting: job costing, billing, WIP accuracy.
• Partner with HR on payroll and related reporting.
• Monitor cash flow, working capital, and AR trends; prepare ad hoc reports.
• Supervise and mentor accounting staff to ensure accurate reporting.
• Maintain strong internal controls and drive process improvements.
