Job description

Re-Scripting Gender, Work, Family, and Care, the entertainment initiative at New America, is part of the Thriving Families cluster, which focuses on family economic security and well-being. The entertainment initiative was founded in 2022 to leverage television and film storytelling to shape narratives and culture around gender equity, work-family justice, caregiving, and related topics. It produces materials, commissions research, and provides consultation to help creators and executives tell rich, meaningful stories that explore these topics, and amplifies television shows, films, and online media projects that treat these issues thoughtfully. The advice we provide and the resources we create are grounded in research, data, and expertise in the substantive topics on which we provide consultation.

Primary Function:

The Senior Communications Associate will expand the initiative’s capacity to promote aligned projects and engage with creatives and stakeholders. Through graphic design, video production, writing, and social media management, the Senior Associate will play an important role in shaping how the initiative presents itself to its core audiences of creatives, executives, and others in the media-for-social-impact ecosystem. The ideal candidate is a versatile communicator and designer who is knowledgeable about design best practices, excited to make work for varied audiences and contexts, and engaged with television, film, and pop culture. The Senior Communications Associate will also support the team’s publications and related outreach efforts.

Responsibilities:
Graphic Design
  • Create static infographics and data visualizations that translate the initiative’s audience research into easy-to-understand visuals
  • Design the following materials, utilizing New America and the initiative’s existing brand and tone guidelines:
    • Social media graphics, newsletter banners, and other images that are engaging and compelling
    • Print products - including info cards, tip sheets, resource guides, and data briefs that present complex information in an accessible and approachable format
    • Slide decks, memos, and other materials customized for individual partners and stakeholders
  • Publish blog posts on the New America website via WordPress CMS and communicate with NA Central Comms about necessary updates to initiative and collections pages that are centrally managed.
Photo and Video
  • Take photos and videos of events when present.
  • Plan, shoot, and edit short videos for social media posts that promote the initiative’s work and recap its events
  • Organize and maintain the initiative’s shared collection of photo and video assets from our events, partners, and shows/films that we want to highlight
Social Media
  • Plan, caption, and publish social media content on the initiative’s Instagram account, according to a plan developed with the Research and Audience Engagement Officer and external partners
  • Monitor community engagement and requests for collaboration on social media
  • Develop and draft content for other online platforms, in partnership with other members of the initiative team and New America's Central Communications staff
Writing and Production Support
  • Collaborate with the Senior Fellow to write the initiative newsletter
  • Contribute research assistance, writing, and editing of educational materials and other written content, as requested
  • Draft and send cold correspondence about initiative materials and offerings to executives, creatives, journalists, and other industry stakeholders each quarter
  • Track the need for printed materials in conjunction with initiative events and coordinate the printing and shipping of published materials to New America's main office and/or event venues
Key Qualifications:
  • 3+ years of experience in communications and/or design
  • Experience with major design and production tools, including:
  • Experience with Adobe CC tools, including Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign, along with complementary typography, grid system, and information design expertise
  • Premiere Pro, Final Cut, or another desktop-based video editing program
  • Datawrapper, Tableau, or a comparable data visualization tool
  • Comfort with project management and database tools, including Airtable and Notion
  • Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills
  • Demonstrated history of working flexibly and creatively, with the ability to tolerate ambiguity and shifts in process or priorities.
Additional Desirable Qualifications:
  • Familiarity with a diverse range of film and television genres to supplement the interests and perspectives of the existing team
  • Understanding of policy and research issues related to gender equity, work-family justice, family economic security, labor, and/or caregiving
  • Experience working directly with entertainment-industry stakeholders, including creatives, executives, and trade press
  • A robust portfolio that demonstrates experience translating complex information into compelling designs and layouts across many types of content and for varied audiences
Compensation and Benefits:

This position is a full-time role with benefits. The annual salary will be between $70,000 - $73,000, depending on experience.

New America offers a highly competitive benefits package that includes health care, dental, and vision coverage; a generous retirement plan; paid time off; observes all federal holidays; and an office-wide closure between Christmas and New Year's Day.

Location:

Los Angeles- or New York-based candidates are preferred, though applicants based elsewhere in the United States are also encouraged to apply.

Travel:

We do not expect this role to involve extensive travel, but occasional trips to Los Angeles and New York, as well as to film festivals in other cities, may be required depending on the initiative's needs and other team members' travel schedules.
