Job summary

Continental Western Group, a Berkley Company, seeks a Commercial Underwriting Manager in Urbandale, IA to lead underwriting teams and drive profitable growth. Located in our Urbandale office, you will guide strategy, monitor risk, and coach staff across construction, manufacturing, and distribution segments.

The role requires a decade of underwriting experience, strong leadership, and the ability to travel.

Qualifications

• Ten years of commercial lines underwriting experience with construction, manufacturing, and distribution.
• Supervisory or management experience strongly desired.
• In-depth knowledge of commercial insurance programs, policies, practices and forms.
• Experience with reinsurance placements and procedures.
• Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
• Proven leadership ability and talent development.
• Able to travel and work outside normal hours.

Responsibilities

• Develop macro and micro underwriting strategies for long-term success.
• Manage an assigned underwriting function and staff with authority delegation.
• Monitor risk acceptability, pricing adequacy, and classification accuracy.
• Underwrite accounts exceeding staff authority and refer to Home Office as needed.
• Develop a high-performing team through coaching and performance management.
• Provide ongoing feedback to staff and leaders for skill development.
• Set and measure performance goals and recognize key achievements.
• Engage independent agencies and manage distribution relationships.
• Conduct quarterly underwriting file quality reviews and act on findings.
• Report pipelines, quotes, new business, retention, and rate attainment.
