Job summary

Berkley Mid-Atlantic Group (BMAG) is seeking a Senior Underwriter to build relationships with independent agents, grow premium, and maximize renewal retention across our Mid-Atlantic footprint. The role emphasizes delivering high customer satisfaction and underwriting excellence within established guidelines.

Key functions include evaluating risk, pricing within authority, and coordinating with inspections and potential reinsurance decisions while leveraging underwriting tools and industry

Qualifications

• BA/BS degree preferred.
• 4+ years of underwriting experience in Commercial Property & Casualty, may consider 2+ years at Underwriter level.
• Demonstrated success in developing and maintaining positive relationships.
• Excellent communication skills, including listening for solutions.
• Willingness to collaborate with colleagues and influence others.
• Analytical thinker with ability to propose solutions.
• High energy self-starter with entrepreneurial spirit.
• Ability to sell and influence others.
• Goal-oriented and results-driven.
• Proficient with Windows-based Word, Excel, and Email.
• Experience with online underwriting tools (e.g., Silver Plume, Reference Connect).
• Advanced professional insurance coursework (CPCU/AU) preferred.

Responsibilities

• The Senior Underwriter builds relationships, maintains a strong distribution channel, drives written premium growth and maximizes renewal retention.
• Delivers a high degree of customer satisfaction within our Independent Agencies footprint.
• Strengthens relationships and educates agents to maximize profitable growth.
• Evaluates new and renewal information to determine risk acceptability and pricing within guidelines.
• Uses underwriting tools to determine risk characteristics, exposure classifications and appropriate limits.
• Orders and reviews inspections to ensure consistency with underwriting information.
• Determines need for facultative reinsurance and documents procedures accordingly.
