Job summary

Institute for Building Technology and Safety (IBTS) seeks a Senior Commercial Building Inspector to perform field inspections of commercial structures in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. The role is on-site with potential multi-year assignments and relocation considerations for highly qualified candidates.

Responsibilities include conducting comprehensive inspections, reviewing plans, documenting violations, and coordinating with stakeholders.

Qualifications

• Minimum 5 years of progressively responsible experience in commercial construction, inspection, or related field.
• ICC Commercial Combination Inspector certification required at hire; other ICC certifications preferred and to be obtained within 6 months.
• Strong knowledge of the International Building Code and related codes.
• Experience inspecting complex commercial structures including restaurants, offices, and large renovations.
• Ability to read and interpret complex drawings and technical specifications.
• Valid driver's license.

Responsibilities

• Conduct comprehensive field inspections to ensure compliance with building, fire, and life safety codes.
• Inspect all construction phases including foundation, structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, energy, and life safety systems.
• Review plans for code compliance and constructability.
• Identify deficiencies and document violations with precision.
• Prepare audit-ready inspection reports and maintain records.
• Coordinate with contractors, engineers, architects, and government officials.
• Interpret and apply applicable codes (ICC IBC) and regulations.
• Support QA, compliance, and regulatory oversight activities.
• Provide technical guidance and resolve complex field issues with minimal supervision.
• Attend meetings and provide updates on inspection status.
