Job summary

GEICO seeks a Distinguished Engineer to lead the private cloud platform strategy and architecture. You will define the future-state OpenStack/Kubernetes-based infrastructure, guide multi-region design, and drive modernization for resilience, cost efficiency, and security across GEICO datacenters.

You will mentor senior engineers, shape platform standards, and partner with security to implement Zero Trust, encryption, and compliance.

Qualifications

• 15+ years of software, infrastructure, cloud, or platform engineering experience.
• 5+ years operating at Principal, Senior Staff, Distinguished Engineer, or equivalent technical leadership level.
• Proven track record designing and operating large-scale cloud platforms.
• Deep Kubernetes architecture, operations, networking, storage, security, and ecosystem tooling.
• Extensive experience with OpenStack services including Nova, Neutron, Cinder, Glance, Keystone, Ironic, Placement.
• Expert Ceph knowledge: RBD, RGW, OSD tuning, performance optimization, multi-site deployments.
• Deep understanding of SDN principles and architectures (EVPN/VXLAN, BGP, overlay networking).
• Strong coding in Go, Python, Rust, or Java; IaC and automation frameworks.

Responsibilities

• Define and own the long-term technical roadmap for GEICO's Private Cloud Platform.
• Establish architectural standards for OpenStack, Kubernetes, Ceph, SDN, identity integration, observability, and automation platforms.
• Lead design reviews across multiple organizations and drive architectural consistency across the infrastructure ecosystem.
• Evaluate emerging technologies and recommend strategic investments to improve platform capabilities and cost efficiency.
• Architect and evolve a large-scale OpenStack-based Infrastructure-as-a-Service platform.
• Define multi-region designs supporting VMs, bare metal, storage, networking, and container platforms.
• Drive modernization initiatives including resiliency, DR, multi-datacenter expansion, and workload migrations.
• Partner with security teams to implement Zero Trust networking, workload identity, encryption, and compliance controls.
• Define SDN architectures spanning datacenter and hybrid cloud environments.
• Drive innovations in network virtualization, overlays, routing automation, and observability.
• Provide technical leadership for large-scale Ceph deployments including block, object, and cloud-native storage.
• Mentor Senior Staff, Principal, and Staff Engineers; lead incident reviews and architecture reviews.
