Job summary

Benchling, Inc. is seeking an experienced Infrastructure Engineer to design, build, and operate scalable platforms that power biotech R&D. You will own multi-quarter projects from design to production, advancing Terraform-based tooling, cost governance, and secure, observable systems.

You will collaborate with engineers across Benchling to deliver reliable, efficient cloud services, mentor teammates, and help set engineering standards. Hybrid in-office work is expected.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of experience in software engineering, site reliability, platform, or infrastructure engineering.
• Proficiency in Python, Go, or TypeScript with strong fundamentals.
• Hands-on AWS experience (EC2, EKS, RDS, VPC, IAM, S3) and IaC, preferably Terraform.
• Knowledge of Kubernetes and container platforms.
• Ability to scope and deliver complex multi-month projects and communicate tradeoffs.
• Experience with on-call rotations and incident response.
• Strong written communication and collaboration.

Responsibilities

• Own projects end-to-end, from initial design to production rollout and handoff.
• Design, build, and maintain internal applications, APIs, automation, and tooling that support Benchling's cloud platform and infrastructure workflows.
• Own parts of our AWS foundation, including Kubernetes (EKS), networking, secrets, and PKI, with clear SLOs and telemetry.
• Advance infrastructure-as-code practices: Terraform Cloud release system, reusable modules, policy-as-code guardrails.
• Drive cloud cost governance: cost visibility, anomaly alerts, and cost allocation across services.
• Contribute to observability tooling and vendor relationships, balancing cost and performance.
• Make architectural decisions that other teams build on and set technical direction.
• Operate and improve production systems, on-call, postmortems, and root-cause analyses.
