Job summary

Sperry Rail, Inc. is seeking an experienced Cloud Engineer to join our US team in Shelton, CT. You will own AWS infrastructure, networking, and security, bridging with UK colleagues, migrating workloads from a legacy datacenter, and driving uptime and reliability.

You will design, implement, and support production, staging, and development environments, collaborate across time zones, and contribute to CI/CD pipelines and IaC efforts. Strong independence and communication are essential.

Qualifications

• AWS: EC2, VPC, IAM, S3, RDS, Lambda, CloudFront, Route 53, ECS, CloudWatch, GuardDuty, Config, Security Hub.
• Networking: TCP/IP, DNS, VPN, load balancing, firewalls.
• Security: IAM, encryption, secrets management, compliance, vulnerability management.
• IaC: CloudFormation, CDK, Terraform.
• CI/CD: CodePipeline, GitHub Actions, Jenkins.
• Scripting: Python, Bash for automation.
• Containerization: Docker, ECS/Fargate.
• Independent work with cross-location collaboration.
• Clear written communication for handovers.
• Version control and agile practices.
• Learning new technologies quickly.
• Explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
• Team-first, Humble/Hungry/Smart mindset.
• AWS certifications beneficial.
• Kubernetes/EKS experience.
• Datacenter-to-cloud migration experience.
• Rail transport compliance knowledge (NIST/ISO 27001).
• FinOps and cloud cost awareness.

• Rail testing/inspection domain familiarity.

Responsibilities

• Design, implement, and maintain AWS cloud infrastructure for prod, staging, and dev environments.
• Contribute to network architecture including VPCs, subnets, security groups, VPNs, Direct Connect, DNS.
• Implement and maintain security best practices: IAM, encryption, secrets management, compliance.
• Build and manage CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure-as-code.
• Support migration of remaining datacenter workloads to AWS.
• Monitor and troubleshoot cloud infrastructure for performance and cost.
• Manage container workloads (Docker, ECS/Fargate, ECR).
• Act as US-based point of contact for infrastructure with UK team.
• Improve docs, stability, and supportability of infra.
• Document architecture decisions, runbooks, and procedures.
• Collaborate with UK engineers across time zones; share standards and on-call.
• Write clean, tested code; participate in code reviews and planning.
• Collaborate with inspection engineers, data scientists, and product managers.
• Foster continuous improvement and knowledge sharing.
