Job summary

Amtrak is seeking a Senior Principal Cloud Platform Architect to drive cloud strategy and architecture for multi-region AWS environments. This remote role emphasizes governance, cost-efficient design, and collaboration with platform engineering teams across the enterprise.

The ideal candidate has extensive experience leading large-scale architecture initiatives, strong communication skills, and a deep understanding of AWS, Terraform, and Well-Architected frameworks.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, data and intelligence or related field with 9+ years of experience.
• Experience directing significantly complex architecture initiatives over $5 million, involving multiple stakeholders and lines of business.
• Experience with $250MM+ enterprises as an architect providing vision and platform choices.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills to work with diverse teams.
• Ability to manage multiple architecture engagements with cross-functional teams.
• Knowledge of AWS Well-Architected Framework and cost-aware design.

Responsibilities

• Set up the cloud architectural vision for core capabilities and ensure consistency and re-use.
• Design architectures for platform engineering teams (CI/CD, cloud, development, communications).
• Define enterprise principles, patterns, and guidance for data capabilities and infrastructure.
• Provide governance across architecture domains to ensure value alignment with goals.
• Ensure reference architectures are secure, compliant, and industry-standard.
• Mentor architects on AWS patterns, cost-aware architecture, and Well-Architected best practices.
• Communicate complex technical ideas to leadership and stakeholders.
• Own end-to-end architecture of Amtrak's multi-region AWS cloud footprint and developer platforms.
• Lead developer enablement platforms (portal, CI/CD, API portal).
• Serve as the principal technical authority on AWS within the practice.
