Job description

Who are we and why should you join us?

BetterHelp is on a mission to remove the traditional barriers to therapy and make mental health care more accessible to everyone. Founded in 2013, we are now the world’s largest online therapy service, providing affordable and convenient therapy across the globe. Our network of over 30,000 licensed therapists has helped millions of people take ownership of their mental health and change their lives forever. And we’re not stopping there – as the unmet need for mental health services continues to grow, BetterHelp is committed to being part of the solution.

As a Senior Clinical QA Specialist, AI at BetterHelp, you’ll join a diverse team of licensed clinicians, engineers, product pros, creatives, marketers, and business leaders who share a passion for expanding access to therapy. And as a mental health company, we take employee mental health just as seriously as we do our mission. We deeply invest in our team’s well‑being and professional development, because we know that business and individual growth go hand-in-hand. At BetterHelp, you’ll carve your own path, make an immediate impact, and be challenged every day – with a supportive community behind you the whole way.

What are we looking for?

We’re building safe, effective AI tools that support both members and clinicians throughout the mental health journey - and we’re growing our team to accelerate this work. We are seeking a hardworking, mission‑driven individual with experience in clinical care and familiarity with AI to join our Clinical Quality and AI Team. The team integrates strategy, quality, and clinical product expertise to drive clinical excellence across BetterHelp.

This role primarily focuses on ensuring AI features and outputs meet safety, clinical, and compliance standards, while contributing to long‑term AI strategies. You will lead our AI Clinical Quality Assurance program by:

  • Helping develop clinical standards, evaluation rubrics and review processes.
  • Identifying risk assessment and escalation pathways and protocols.
  • Assessing AI outputs for clinical safety integrity, ethics, and compliance.
  • Translating insights into actionable and meaningful improvements across AI tools and workflows.

The ideal candidate is a self‑starter with a growth mindset, grounded in clinical quality and energized by the rapid evolution of AI in healthcare. They bring experience in telemedicine and AI applications, thoughtfully balance rigor with efficiency, and are passionate about improving therapeutic outcomes through safe, innovative technologies. This dynamic role offers significant opportunities for impact and professional growth, shaping how mental health care evolves globally through AI‑powered solutions.

What will you do?
A. Primary Responsibilities
  • Help develop, operationalize and refine QA frameworks, including testing protocols, evaluation rubrics, monitoring systems and review processes for AI tools.
  • Conduct ongoing pre‑and post‑production evaluation and auditing of AI outputs for clinical safety, accuracy and bias, and alignment with therapeutic, ethical and regulatory standards.
  • Review and assess AI‑related escalations from BetterHelp therapists, clients, and/or customer‑facing teams; identify patterns, severity, and appropriate escalation pathways.
  • Analyze QA findings and trends to generate clear, actionable Clinical AI QA reporting, which includes recommendations for improving AI features, model behavior, prompts, guardrails and workflows. Communicate reporting with cross‑functional partners.
  • Help develop and maintain clinical AI risk and escalation pathways in partnership with relevant cross‑functional teams (e.g., Legal, Compliance, Clinical Operations) to define issue severity, escalation thresholds, response protocols, and processes for tracking issues through resolution.
  • Support clinical risk assessment for new and evolving AI capabilities, including identifying potential failure modes, defining appropriate safeguards, and helping ensure adherence to clinical, ethical, and regulatory expectations.
  • Stay current on emerging AI QA and evaluation methodologies, tools, research, and industry best practices, particularly those relevant to healthcare / mental health, and incorporate relevant advances into BetterHelp’s AI QA approach.
B. Additional Responsibilities
  • Contribute to research studies or evaluations related to AI efficacy, safety, quality and emerging evaluation approaches.
  • Support Clinical Department initiatives, including office hours, newsletters, and other team programs as needed.
  • Represent BetterHelp externally in public events, webinars, presentations and/or conferences as appropriate.
What will you NOT do?
  • You will NOT worry about "runway", "cash left", or "how much time we have until the next round". We have the startup DNA but we're fully backed and funded, all the way to success.
  • You will NOT be confined to your "job". You will get involved in product, marketing, business strategy, and almost everything we do.
  • You will NOT be bogged down by office politics, ego, or bad attitude. Only positive, pleasure‑to‑work‑with people are allowed here!
  • You will NOT get yourself burned out. We work hard but we believe in maintaining a sustainable work/life balance. Really.
Can I work remotely?

Yes. We operate on PST and candidates in any time zone are welcome to apply. We ask employees to travel to our San Jose, CA office up to three times per year plus one company‑wide offsite to collaborate in person and strengthen working relationships. Travel expenses are covered and reasonable accommodations are made for those under unique circumstances who cannot travel.

Requirements
  • Graduate degree (Masters or Doctorate) in counseling, psychology, or social work.
  • Clinical background in mental health (e.g., psychotherapy, telemedicine, digital mental health, or related care settings)
  • Knowledge of emerging AI regulatory frameworks and best practices for AI in mental health (e.g., crisis response models and digital escalation workflows).
  • Experience working in AI, technology, or data science applications in healthcare settings.
  • Knowledge of quality assurance, auditing, and compliance processes, including privacy, security and confidentiality standards in mental healthcare.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to translate clinical expertise into clear operational and product guidance for AI systems.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills; comfort operating in fast‑paced, data‑driven environments.
  • Experience collaborating with cross‑functional teams.
  • Growth mindset, curiosity, and a passion for advancing mental health care through safe and innovative technologies.
  • Broad understanding of evidenced based therapeutic approaches and current clinical trends.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Specialized degrees, certifications, or training in AI.
  • Familiarity with LLM evaluation methods and/or direct experience in AI evaluation; for example, redlining AI outputs for model improvement.
  • Background in data analytics or research.
  • Ability to rapidly learn new technologies and processes with minimal direction.
Benefits
  • Remote work with regular in‑person bonding experiences sponsored by the company
  • Competitive compensation
  • Holistic perks program (including free therapy, employee wellness, and more)
  • Excellent health, dental, and vision coverage
  • 401k benefits with employer matching contribution
  • The chance to build something that changes lives – and that people love
  • Any piece of hardware or software that will make you happy and productive
  • An awesome community of co‑workers
