Job summary

Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance in Boston seeks a Senior Claims Examiner for our Casualty claims team. This role handles Casualty claims end-to-end in a collaborative, client-focused environment.

You will work across jurisdictions, draft coverage positions, and coordinate with brokers, insureds, and defense counsel while delivering best-in-class claims handling. The position offers a competitive base salary and comprehensive benefits.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Manage and adjust Casualty claims on primary and excess policies with high service and file quality.
• Proactively handle claims from first notice of loss through ultimate resolution, advising internal partners and clients/brokers.
• Collaborate with insureds and brokers in handling and adjudication of claims.
• Draft coverage letters and communicate coverage positions effectively.
• Conduct, coordinate, and proactively handle the investigation process and timely resolution.
• Monitor assignments to experts and defense counsel as necessary.
• Evaluate information related to coverage, liability, and damages to determine exposure.
• Draft reports, set reserves within authority, and make claim recommendations.
• Travel to conferences, mediations, customer meetings, and trials as necessary.

BHSI has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Claims Examiner on our Casualty claims team. At BHSI, our claims professionals are an integral part of our business. Every claim is handled with the utmost skill by seasoned and dedicated claims professionals. We are seeking an experienced professional to join our growing team in the Boston office. This position is a great opportunity for practicing lawyers looking to transition out of a law firm as well as claim professionals with casualty claims experience.

In this role, the Senior Claims Examiner will have a unique opportunity to handle and adjust all facets of Casualty claims in a highly collaborative team environment, dedicated to best in class claims handling.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Manage and adjust Casualty claims impacting primary and excess policies while ensuring the highest level of customer service and technical claim file quality.
• Proactively handle claims from first notice of loss through ultimate resolution, while advising internal partners and meeting with clients and brokers.
• Collaborate and partner with the insureds and brokers in the handling and adjudication of claims.
• Analyze and draft coverage letters as appropriate and communicate coverage positions effectively.
• Conduct, coordinate, and proactively handle the investigation process and ensure timely resolution of claims.
• Directly and closely monitor assignments to experts and defense counsel as necessary.
• Evaluate information related to coverage, liability, and damages to determine the extent of exposure to the insured and the company.
• Draft reports, set reserves within authority, and make claim recommendations concerning reserve changes.
• Travel to conferences, mediations, customer meetings, and trials as necessary.

Qualifications, Skills And Experience

• A minimum of 5 years of experience handling Casualty claims, or matching equivalency.
• Ability to demonstrate technical competence in the handling of specialized claims.
• Ability to work independently and assimilate learning materials on many different subjects from various sources.
• Excellent interpersonal, communication, investigative and negotiation skills.
• Ability and willingness to work effectively in a team environment and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
• Demonstrated experience in handling and adjusting claims in multiple jurisdictions and must possess, or successfully obtain, the required adjuster licenses.

The base salary range for this position is $120,000 to $140,000, along with annual bonus eligibility. Total compensation for a candidate is determined by their relevant skills, location, and experience.
