Job summary

Sargent & Lundy is seeking a civil/site development engineer based in Washington, DC, for work within a multi‑disciplinary team on power plant projects. The role focuses on preparing calculations, designs, and specifications for site development, grading, and drainage; coordinating with clients, contractors, and permitting agencies.

The candidate will guide other engineers, prepare permitting calculations, and design road, stormwater, and wastewater systems, with occasional travel to client

Qualifications

  • BSCE from an ABET-approved program.
  • PE license or ability to earn a PE license.
  • 5+ years in a project team environment designing industrial projects; power plant experience preferred.
  • Experience in site grading and mass earthwork, storm-water management, sanitary sewage systems, process wastewater systems, and road and railroad track design.
  • Experience in technical writing for reports, calculations, and specifications.
  • Experience obtaining site related permits from regulatory agencies.
  • Proficiency with civil engineering design tools such as Civil 3D, StormCad, PondPack, and AutoTurn; MS Office.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to work in a team environment.
  • Position based in Washington, DC with potential travel.

Responsibilities

  • Design storm drainage systems, roads, trackwork, water storage, wastewater ponds, and landfills.
  • Review contractor and material submittals and vendor documentation for conformity with specs.
  • Travel to client offices for design reviews and to plant sites for construction coordination and field verification.

Job description

  • Coordinate with project managers, clients, contractors, suppliers, and permitting agencies to ensure complete and timely design.
  • Guide other civil engineers and designers in completing project work when the scope and complexity require it.
  • Prepare calculations for storm‑water drainage, sanitary sewer systems, pavement thickness, ponds and landfills, and earthwork to support permitting and design.
  • Develop technical specifications that define construction requirements.
  • Design site layout, grading, and drainage, and collaborate with designers to accurately portray designs in 3‑D models and drawing set.
  • Design storm drainage systems, roads, trackwork, water storage, wastewater disposal ponds, and solid waste landfills.

Work Schedule

This position is based on a hybrid work schedule and will require in‑office work three days per week.

Qualifications
  • BSCE from an ABET‑approved program.
  • PE license or ability to earn a PE license.
  • Five or more years of experience in a project team environment designing industrial projects; power plant experience preferred.
  • Specific experience in site grading and mass earthwork, storm‑water management, sanitary sewage systems, process wastewater systems, and road and railroad track design.
  • Experience in technical writing for reports, calculations, and specifications.
  • Experience obtaining site related permits from regulatory agencies.
  • Proficiency with civil engineering design tools such as Civil 3D, StormCad, PondPack, and AutoTurn.
  • Proficiency with MS Office applications.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • The ability to work in a team environment is essential.
  • Position is based in Washington, DC and may require occasional travel.

AI & Automation
  • Lead others in using data and modern tools such as automation and AI to improve workflows, reduce rework, and deliver cost‑effective designs.
  • Direct automation and process‑improvement work, e.g., automating calculations, summarizing technical documents, generating design documentation, and guiding when and how AI tools are used while ensuring results are verified.
  • Oversee engineers who program or script (Python, MATLAB, advanced Excel) to automate engineering tasks; review automated outputs. This is valued but not required.
  • Additional learning in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Software Engineering, or related fields is valued for effective oversight of automation workflows.

Compensation

$84,762 - $129,498. Eligible employees may also receive a yearly discretionary bonus.
