Job summary

Sargent & Lundy in Glen Allen, VA seeks a civil engineer to design and supervise industrial projects, with a hybrid work schedule of three days in office weekly.

Job description

This position will offer you the opportunity to utilize and expand your civil engineering degree and skills while working in a multi‑disciplined team environment with other engineers and designers in the design, modification and analysis of power plants, substations, transmission lines and similar industrial systems. The role requires a hybrid work schedule: in‑office work three days per week.

Responsibilities

• Prepare calculations relating to storm‑water drainage, sanitary sewer systems, pavement thickness, ponds, landfills and earthwork to support permitting and design.
• Prepare technical specifications that define construction requirements.
• Design site layout, grading and drainage, and work with designers to accurately portray designs in 3‑D models and design drawings.
• Design storm drainage systems, roads, trackwork, water storage and wastewater disposal ponds, and solid waste landfills.
• Review contractor and material submittal drawings and other vendor documentation for conformity with technical specifications.
• Coordinate with project managers, client personnel, contractors, suppliers and permitting agency personnel to ensure a complete and timely design.
• Travel to client offices for design reviews and to plant site locations for construction coordination and field verification of designs.
• Provide leadership by guiding other civil engineers and designers as appropriate based on scope and complexity.

Qualifications

• BSCE from an ABET Engineering Accreditation Commission–approved program.
• PE license or ability to earn a PE license.
• Five or more years of experience working in a project team environment in the design of industrial projects (power‑plant experience preferred). Specific experience required: site grading and mass earthwork, storm‑water management, sanitary sewage systems, process wastewater systems, and road and railroad track design.
• Experience in technical writing for reports, calculations and specifications.
• Experience preparing, submitting and obtaining site‑related permits from regulatory agencies.
• Proficiency with civil engineering design tools such as Civil 3D, StormCad, PondPack and AutoTurn.
• Proficiency with MS Office applications.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work effectively in a team environment.

Hybrid Work Schedule

The position is based in Glen Allen, VA, and may require occasional travel.

AI & Automation

• Lead others in applying data and modern tools, including automation and AI, to improve workflows, reduce rework and deliver cost‑effective designs.
• Oversee engineering tasks automated through scripting (Python, MATLAB, advanced Excel) and ensure results are reviewed.
• Value additional learning or experience in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Software Engineering or related fields to support oversight of automation workflows.

Compensation Range

$84,762 – $129,498
