Savannah River Mission Completion seeks a Senior Chemist I based in the Savannah River Site, Aiken, SC, to provide technical oversight of laboratory activities and lead instrument/method development and troubleshooting. You will guide data review, safety management, and reporting to ensure high-quality results.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Interpret and evaluate lab results to ensure analytical accuracy, including highly radioactive samples.
• Recommend improvements in analytical equipment, procedures, and method development with cross‑functional collaboration.
• Provide quality control specs to ensure process consistency and data integrity.
• Perform qualitative and quantitative analyses on various sample types (liquid, solid, sludge).
• Lead shift group for analyses involving highly radioactive materials and mentor staff.
• Interface with vendors and procurement for service subcontracts and equipment maintenance.

Overview

Savannah River Mission Completion (SRMC) is seeking an Senior Chemist I to be based in our Aiken, SC location on the Savannah River Site (SRS).

The Senior Chemist I provides technical oversight and subject matter expertise for laboratories. Provides day-to-day support and analytical oversight of instrument and method development and troubleshooting. Contributes to general improvement initiatives such as procedure/method development, technician skill enhancement/training, data review, error free reporting and/or integrated safety management systems.

Responsibilities

• Interprets and evaluates lab results to ensure tolerance and acceptability within required analytical limits (Samples can range from clean/stable to highly radioactive/unstable).
• Recommends improvements in analytical equipment, procedures, techniques, and method development. Includes collaborating with Engineering, National Lab scientists and/or other industry experts.
• Provides quality control specifications to ensure process consistency, quality, and optimal yield performance.
• May perform qualitative and quantitative analyses on liquid, solid, and sludge samples for organic, inorganic and/or metal constituents.
• May run measurement control program across multiple analytical services for quality assessments/audits.
• May prepare technical reports based on the interpretation of analyzed data.
• May interface with off-site vendors, STR’s, and procurement to establish service subcontracts to maintain lab instrumentation. Includes installation of new equipment and maintenance of current equipment.
• Assists in the training development and training of lab personal on proper techniques for operating instrumentation.
• Provides technical leadership to less experienced chemists and technicians.
• Leads shift group to conduct analytical work with highly radioactive materials.
• Acts as lead person or technical advisor on small projects.
• May function as the person-in-charge for preview/review of the safety and hazard controls in different laboratory.
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or Master's degree in chemistry or related science from an accredited college or university and professional related work experience.
• Experience working in a nuclear facility or in a laboratory using radioactive material.

Additional Information

• The use of protective clothing and respiratory equipment is required when working in a radioactive environment.

Preferred Qualifications

• Current SRMC lab experience preferred
• Working experience with various analytical equipment to include IC, ICP-MS, GC-FID, GC-MS, HPLC-MS, TIC/TOC, Autotitrator, and/or Mercury analyzer.
• Working experience with Radiochemistry instrumentation and techniques to include Alpha Spectroscopy, Liquid Scintillation Counter, and Gamma Detector, column separations and electrodeposition plating.
