Job summary

Naval Nuclear Laboratory is seeking a Chemist/Chemical Engineer to join the Reactor Plant Chemistry group. The role focuses on radiochemistry and radiochemistry equipment for U.S.

Navy ships and prototypes, supporting multiple platforms and training fleets. The successful candidate will resolve chemistry issues, support control improvements, and work with a multidisciplinary team to test and implement radiochemistry methods, while coordinating projects and providing training and documentation.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctorate in a technical, engineering, or science field with relevant experience.
  • Experience with radiochemistry analysis and related equipment preferred.
  • Knowledge of nuclear power plant systems and gamma spectroscopy methods is beneficial.

Responsibilities

  • Resolve reactor plant chemistry issues and radiochemical analysis method/equipment issues.
  • Support chemistry control improvement initiatives.
  • Collaborate with engineers and scientists to test and implement radiochemistry methods and equipment.
  • Design tests for deployed radiochemistry systems, qualify next-gen hardware, and maintain procedures and training.
  • Coordinate and manage multiple projects interfacing with various organizations.

Job Description

The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is looking for a Chemist/Chemical Engineer to join the Reactor Plant Chemistry group supporting reactor plant chemistry with an emphasis on radiochemistry and radiochemistry equipment for U.S. Navy aircraft carriers, submarines, prototypes and moored training ships.

The successful candidate will:

  • Resolve reactor plant chemistry issues and radiochemical analysis method and equipment issues.
  • Support reactor plant chemistry control improvement initiatives.
  • Work with a multi-disciplined team of engineers and scientists to test and implement radiochemistry analysis methods and equipment.
  • Support deployed radiochemistry analysis systems by designing tests, qualifying next-generation hardware, writing and maintaining procedures, training operators, responding to emergent fleet requests for technical assistance, and evaluating system data.
  • Coordinate and manage all aspects of small and large projects which require interfacing with various NNL organizations and external organizations.

The successful candidate should be able to work efficiently on multiple tasks and complete tasks in a timely manner. Limited travel is required for installation of radiochemistry equipment, vendor meetings, and radiochemistry technology conferences.

Required Combination of Knowledge and Skill

Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university in a related technical, engineering or science field and a minimum of 6 years of relevant experience; or Masters degree from an accredited college or university in a related technical, engineering or science field and a minimum of 4 years of relevant experience; or Doctorate degree from an accredited college or university in a related technical, engineering or science field and a minimum of 1 year of relevant experience; or Currently a Senior Reactor Training Engineer, Refueling Engineer, or Field (RPCO) Engineer at the Company.

Preferred Skills
  • Knowledge of nuclear power plant systems.
  • Knowledge of gamma spectroscopy equipment, troubleshooting, and analysis methods.
  • Radiochemistry, analytical chemistry, or inorganic chemistry course work and laboratory experience.
  • Experience with gamma-ray spectroscopy data processing software and data analysis.
  • Experience with training or teaching in technical subject matter.

Pay Range

$95,700.00 - $149,600.00 annually
Salary information provided is a general guideline only. Annual salary is based upon candidate experience and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations.

All candidates must be U.S. citizens. Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter. FMP is a government contractor and maintains a drug free workplace and workforce. All candidates must be able to pass a drug test in compliance with FMP company policy and 10 CFR 707. Marijuana is a Federal Schedule I controlled substance and illegal under Federal Law. Therefore, FMP is required to test for marijuana.
