Our client is looking for a Strategic Category Manager Construction materials and / or services . Salary plus bonus incentives and full medical benefits, Paid Pension, Matched 401K. This is NOT a Supply Chain Management position. Initially remote, with eventual requirement of 3 visits to the East Bay office.

The department collaborates with internal clients and suppliers to develop mutually beneficial total cost solutions for goods and services. Services include procurement, strategic sourcing, cost savings, contract management, supplier relationship management, diversity planning, compliance, procurement support, and managing the procure-to-pay cycle.

Position Summary

This role manages one or more sourcing categories typically exceeding $150MM, overseeing all Tier 1 contracts. Responsibilities include developing strategic category plans to optimize costs, service, diversity spend, and total cost of ownership. The role requires influencing senior leadership and internal stakeholders to align with sourcing strategies.

The candidate will develop, source, and negotiate major contracts, play a key role in supplier relationship management, and sign non-disclosure agreements while ensuring compliance and ethics.

You will be instrumental in optimizing sourcing strategies for a major utility, focusing on cost efficiency, supplier performance, and risk mitigation. The role involves leading category planning, negotiations, and contract management to create value and sustainability, aligning strategies with business goals and industry standards.

Job Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement category plans and sourcing strategies for medium complexity categories to optimize costs, mitigate risks, and ensure supply continuity.
  • Lead competitive bidding processes, including RFPs and RFIs, to secure best-value agreements.
  • Negotiate, draft, and manage contracts ensuring compliance with regulations and policies.
  • Build strategic relationships with suppliers, conduct performance reviews, and foster innovation and continuous improvement aligned with safety and sustainability goals.
  • Influence cross-functional teams and stakeholders in sourcing and negotiation strategies.
  • Stay informed on industry trends, supplier landscapes, and regulatory changes to guide strategic sourcing.
  • Conduct market research and supplier risk analysis to assess financial health and ensure supply chain resilience.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Supply Chain Management, or related field; MBA preferred.
  • At least 3 years of experience developing category sourcing strategies for Construction Materials and / or Construction Services.
  • Proven negotiation skills, contract development, and favorable outcome delivery.
  • Strong analytical skills with experience in spend analytics, cost modeling, and digital procurement tools.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite and SAP or similar software.
