Job summary

Charter Steel is hiring a Senior Project Engineer – Capital Projects to lead the full lifecycle of complex capital initiatives across multiple facilities. You will own projects from concept through startup, partnering with plant leaders, engineering teams, vendors, and key stakeholders to deliver value while maintaining safety and quality standards.

The role requires 7+ years in operational/project leadership, a Mechanical or Electrical degree, and willingness to travel about 40%.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or related engineering degree.
• Seven plus years’ experience in operational management with direct project management responsibility.
• Experience in coaching and influencing others to achieve results.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Proven experience leading multiple capital projects through full lifecycle.
• Excellent analytical skills for engineering solutions.
• Leadership experience with cross-functional teams.
• Advanced experience with capital equipment procurement including detailed RFQ generation.
• Critical thinking to understand strategic direction and weigh cost-benefit of projects.
• Self-starter with little supervision.
• Formal team training with proven success.
• Willingness to travel (Annually 40%).

Responsibilities

• Lead the development, justification, design, and execution of capital projects.
• Act as an engineering lead and role model within the operations group and broader engineering organization.
• Develop and validate financial business cases including ROI, NPV, capacity, costs and risk.
• Act as liaison between Plant Project Managers and outside contractors.
• Identify engineering needs for key stakeholders within the business.
• Relate well to employees to teach best practices for tackling engineering projects.
• Lead cross-functional teams and influence decision-making to achieve objectives.
• Utilize internal and external resources through project phases.
• Lead Greenfield, Brownfield, expansion, modernization, acquisition, and asset-relocation projects from concept through startup.
• Follow Environmental, Quality and Safety procedures.
• Meet essential job requirements with or without accommodation.
