We are seeking an experienced and results-driven Senior Project Engineer to lead operational efforts for complex structural steel and metal fabrication projects. This individual will serve as a technical authority for structural engineering while collaborating closely with operations, manufacturing, estimating, project management, and customers to ensure projects and operational processes are designed, engineered, and executed efficiently.
The ideal candidate brings extensive experience in the structural steel, metal fabrication, or industrial construction industries and understands how engineering and process decisions impact manufacturing, production flow, quality, and field installation. This is a highly visible leadership role that requires technical excellence, business acumen and effective communication skills.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the engineering and design of structural steel and miscellaneous metal projects from concept through fabrication and delivery.
- Review and approve structural calculations, engineering drawings, connection designs, shop drawings and process plans.
- Provide engineering support to estimating, detailing, project management, and manufacturing teams.
- Ensure compliance with applicable building codes, OSHA requirements, AISC standards, AWS specifications, and customer requirements in accordance with business needs.
- Collaborate with external engineering customers to resolve technical issues.
- Identify opportunities to improve manufacturability, fabrication efficiency, and installation methods.
- Review project specifications and contract documents to identify engineering risks and opportunities.
- Develop engineering standards, best practices, and quality procedures.
- Support value engineering initiatives that reduce cost without compromising quality or safety.
- Participate in project planning meetings and provide technical guidance throughout the project lifecycle.
- Assist with problem-solving during fabrication when engineering challenges arise.
- Maintain awareness of emerging technologies, materials, and industry best practices.
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor's degree in Structural Engineering, Civil Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering
- Minimum 8 years of progressive engineering experience.
- Extensive experience in structural steel, miscellaneous metals, heavy industrial construction, or metal fabrication.
- Strong knowledge of:
- Fabrication processes
- Multi-stage manufacturing environments
- Assembly line production
- Experience working directly with fabrication shops and manufacturing operations.
- Strong understanding of AISC, IBC, AWS, OSHA, related engineering standards, shop drawings, weld symbols and steel fabrication documents.
- Ability to interpret structural drawings, specifications, and contract documents.
- Excellent communication and leadership skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting manufacturing operations.
- Experience with BIM and 3D modeling software.
- Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing principles.
- Experience with ERP or manufacturing systems.
