Job summary

American Water seeks a Senior Capital Program Specialist to manage financial aspects of Enterprise Capital Program Management and related governance. You will support strategic enhancements to meet business drivers and serve as a companywide financial resource for CPM.

You will coordinate five-year plans, lead budget reviews, and train managers on PowerPlan, SAP, and related tools, ensuring accurate reporting and strong cross‑functional collaboration across Finance, Engineering, and Tax.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in business, accounting, finance, or engineering (water and/or wastewater).
  • 5–7 years of experience after the bachelor's degree.
  • Strong financial analysis and budgeting skills; capable of cross-functional collaboration.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and consolidate the 5-year capital plan and quarterly forecasts with sound financial data.
  • Lead monthly reviews of the Enterprise Capital Budget and CPM meetings; support agenda/minutes and SOX controls.
  • Design training for Project Managers on financials and tools (PowerPlan, SAP, eBuilder) and drive capital initiatives.
  • Perform monthly/quarterly/yearly capital reporting for internal and external audiences using PowerPlan and SAP.
  • Serve as liaison between Engineering/Capital and Accounting, Finance, Rates, and Tax on CPM topics.
  • Support enterprise-wide projects, policy creation, and tool selection/implementation.

Job Description:

Primary Role

Responsible for all financial aspects of Enterprise Capital Program Management (CPM) and associated governance related to policies, practices, procedures, controls, and reporting. Assist in the strategic enhancement of the Enterprise and Operating Unit's capital program to meet key business drivers. Serves as a companywide resource for financial aspects of Capital Program Management (CPM).

Key Accountabilities
  • Responsible for the coordination and consolidation of the 5-Year Capital Business Plan and Quarterly Reforecasts -. Analyzes and assures that all financial information is sound including updates with Actuals, calculation of AFUDC, calculation of labor OH, calculation of engineering OH, and reflection of in-service dates for depreciation forecasting. (20%)
  • Functions of the lead role for monthly reviews of the Enterprise Capital Budget and Capital Program Management (CPM) meetings. Support in the development of agenda and minutes for approval or projects, validation of SOX Controls, and overall review of the Capital Program. (15%)
  • Design and develop training programs for Project Managers specific to the financial aspects and use of PowerPlan, SAP and other systems (i.e., eBuilder) related to engineering/capital projects. Provides input for potential enhancements and modifications to those systems. Serves in the lead role for training and other company-wide capital initiatives. (30%)
  • Perform all monthly, quarterly, yearly, and ad hoc capital reporting using PowerPlan and SAP and other tools for both internal purposes and external purposes where applicable (, Corporate CPM Committee, BRIS, SOX, SEC, Utility Commission, etc.). Develops companywide reports as needed. (15%)
  • Serve as primary liaison between Engineering/Capital and Accounting, Finance, Rates, Tax. and Utility Plant Accounting on all Capital Program Management (CPM) topics. Ensures all capital financial data and costs are accurately provided to Finance Representative. (15%)
  • Provide support on Enterprise-Wide projects and initiatives related to Capital Program Management including, but not limited to, the development of policies and practices, and selection and implementation of software tools. (5%)
Knowledge/Skills
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills (e.g., report writing, listening, and presentation).
  • Strong interpersonal skills (e.g., tact/diplomacy, persuasion, team building, cooperation, leadership, ability to motivate others.
  • Computer literacy. Competent in the use of work processing, spreadsheet, flow-charting. (Excellent Microsoft Office skills: Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Financial analysis skills, including budget management and basic accounting knowledge.
  • Ability to work independently on complex projects of large scope.
  • Strong quantitative and analytical skills; attention to detail.
  • Strong PowerPlan and SAP knowledge.
  • Knowledge of water and/or wastewater engineering and/or operations.
Experience/Education
  • Bachelor's Degree (required) in business, accounting, finance, or engineering (water and/or wastewater related).
  • Five (5) to seven (7) years’ experience, post bachelors degree
Work Environment
  • 90 – 95 % Office Environment
Travel Requirements
  • 5-10% within respective Operating Unit(s).
  • Occasional travel outside of respective Operating Unit(s).
