You will be responsible for driving end-to-end requirements for complex calculation changes, including enhancements, defect resolution, and modernization initiatives across the Python-based calculation engine and legacy APL tools. This role requires strong domain understanding, the ability to navigate ambiguity, and ownership of delivering high-quality, implementation-ready requirements. You will apply specialized Python development expertise and strong engineering practices to keep the calculation engine current with changing regulatory, product, and business requirements while identifying, recommending, and delivering scalable enhancements that strengthen long-term platform quality. Your work will require independent judgment, broad technical perspective, and the ability to solve complex production, calculation, data, and integration issues in a controlled environment. You will partner closely with Actuarial Technology, Data Engineering, Cloud COE, Product Actuarial, and other IT teams to design, test, document, and implement application changes that are secure, resilient, maintainable, and production ready. You will also provide technical guidance and knowledge transfer to product analysts and APL coders, promote coding discipline and testing discipline, and help shape the long-term strategy for modernizing remaining APL capabilities into Python and the LASSIE platform where appropriate.

What You Will Be Doing

  • Manage and develop a small team of product analysts / APL coders (Product Technical Development); provide technical guidance, coaching, and knowledge transfer, including Python development practices, code hygiene, expectations for documentation, and testing discipline.
  • Lead and own end-to-end requirements for LASSIE enhancements, defect fixes, and calculation changes across the Python-based engine and supporting tools.
  • Partner with Product and Actuarial teams to understand business intent, regulatory updates, and feature needs, and translate them into clear, actionable requirements that align with Genworth standards, controls, and long-term platform strategy.[AB1.1]
  • Design, develop, test, document, and implement changes for LASSIE in partnership with Actuarial Technology, Data Engineering, Cloud COE, Product Actuarial, and other IT partner teams.
  • Maintain clear and comprehensive documentation of requirements, calculation logic, and change history. Ensure traceability across requirements, implementation, and validation to support audit and compliance needs.
  • Lead analysis and clarification for enhancements and bug fixes within the Python calculation engine. Support root cause analysis and resolution of calculation and production issues, ensuring alignment with expected business outcomes. Coordinate work across business and IT resources, establishing technical priorities, and communicate status, risks, and recommended decisions to stakeholders.
  • Maintain and support APL tools for in-force illustrations and exception policy administration while developing plans to convert or integrate remaining capabilities into Python and the LASSIE platform where appropriate.
  • Apply strong engineering fundamentals and coding best practices to keep solutions modular, scalable, secure, resilient, and maintainable as the platform grows.
  • Support Customer Service and business partners with complex product calculation questions, production research, and issue resolution.
What You Bring
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems, actuarial science, mathematics, engineering, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent experience.
  • 7-10+ years of relevant experience
  • Significant progressive application development experience in the insurance industry, including specialized depth in Python programming and experience supporting complex business-critical applications.
  • Strong experience in Business Systems Analysis / Product Analysis, with demonstrated ownership of complex initiatives.
  • Experience partnering with IT, cloud, data engineering, security, and business teams to design and deliver application enhancements across integrated systems and controlled environments.
  • Ability to lead complex technical initiatives or small technical teams, coordinate internal and external resources, manage competing priorities, and communicate risks, tradeoffs, and recommendations clearly.
  • Experience using AI-enabled tools to support code translation, modernization, testing, documentation, or developer productivity while maintaining appropriate review and control discipline.
  • Strong critical thinking, analytical, communication, collaboration, and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to translate complex technical concepts for both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and guide team members with strong product expertise, while actively driving and supporting their upskill in Python programming.
  • Experience working with relational databases - SQL Server and PostgreSQL – with focus on data analysis, troubleshooting, and validation.
