Job summary

The City of Bartow is seeking an experienced Building Official to manage the Building Department, overseeing permitting, inspections, and plan review for a growing Central Florida community.

Reporting to the Assistant City Manager, the Building Official will balance technical expertise with strong customer service, guide staff, maintain code compliance, and help ensure safe development and quality of life in Bartow. The salary range is $104,636–$180,024 with municipal benefits.

Qualifications

• Minimum of two years of higher education in construction, engineering, architecture, building technology, or a related field
• 10 years of progressively responsible public experience in Building Inspection, Design, Construction, or a related field; alternatively, up to five years of post-secondary construction education combined with work experience totaling 10 years
• Five years of supervisory experience in a senior capacity
• Florida Building Code Administration license within six months following appointment or pursuing eligibility
• Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Florida Driver’s License
• An equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be considered

Responsibilities

• Direct the Building Department, including planning, permitting, and inspection services
• Transition from contracted service to full in-house model
• Lead with customer-focused leadership and outstanding interpersonal skills
• Promote continuous service improvement and Best Management Practices
