Job summary

Michigan Technological University is seeking a Building Mechanic III to ensure safe, efficient operation and maintenance of assigned building systems, creating a secure and comfortable environment for students and staff.

Responsibilities include proactive maintenance, regulatory compliance, and cost-effective management under minimal supervision. The role requires reading blueprints, performing electrical and HVAC work, and coordinating with AFSCME employees as needed.

Qualifications

• High school diploma with 2+ years in a related trade school OR an Associate Degree in Construction, Technology, or related field OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Four years experience in building operations and maintenance including electrical, mechanical, architectural, HVAC, steam systems, water systems, refrigeration systems, and fire suppression systems.
• Two years experience working with the general public/customers.

Responsibilities

• Ensure conformance to safety, security, and sanitation regulations.
• Provide excellent customer service to a diverse group of internal and external customers.
• Identify maintenance and custodial needs.
• Establish and adjust work assignments to meet operational needs.
• Maintain inventory and order parts and materials for maintenance and custodial operations.
• Prepare maintenance inspection reports.
• Conduct inspections of storage areas to maintain a neat, clean area.
• Perform general maintenance and repair/replace work in assigned areas and buildings.
• Respond to fire and elevator alarms and provide for building occupant needs.
• Maintain energy management of building systems.
• Perform janitorial work as required.
• Read and work from blueprints, sketches, schematic diagrams and instruction manuals.
• Operate HVAC energy management systems.
