Job summary

The City of Hayward is seeking a Supervising Building Inspector to oversee the Building Division’s inspection section and provide technical guidance to staff. The role will supervise and coordinate inspection activities, establish work priorities, and support staff development.

The ideal candidate has extensive knowledge of California building codes, strong supervisory experience, and the ability to lead teams, address complex technical issues, and communicate effectively with contractors,

Qualifications

• Five years of building, electrical, plumbing, or mechanical inspection experience.
• Two years in lead or direct supervision.
• Equivalent to completion of the 12th grade.
• Valid California Driver’s License at appointment.
• Two or more ICC certifications in building, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate and supervise inspection functions across trades to ensure code compliance.
• Serve as field supervisor for inspections in progress and upon completion.
• Assign inspection districts to staff to balance workload.
• Establish priorities and timeframes for enforcement activities.
• Develop training programs and checklists for inspectors.
• Prepare performance appraisals and interpret codes for the public.
• Prepare reports and conduct studies on inspection programs.
• Conduct field inspections as needed.
• Perform related duties as required.
