Job summary

The City of Hayward is seeking a Supervising Building Inspector to lead the Building Division’s inspection section. You will supervise staff, provide technical guidance on California codes, and ensure consistent application of building and enforcement practices.

The role emphasizes staff development, performance management, and coordinating workload across districts, with potential acting-BOO duties in absence of the City Building Official. Strong leadership required.

Qualifications

• Five years’ experience in building/electrical/plumbing or mechanical inspection with two years in lead or direct supervision.
• Possession of a valid California Driver’s License.
• Completion of supervisory skills training coursework within probationary period.
• Two or more ICC combination certifications in required areas.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate and supervise inspection functions to ensure code compliance.
• Assign inspection districts and balance workloads.
• Develop training programs for inspectors.
• Prepare performance appraisals of staff.
• Interpret codes for public, contractors, architects, engineers.
• Conduct field inspections as needed.
