Job summary

The Town of Brookline seeks a Building Commissioner to lead the Building Department and its operations, including code enforcement, inspections, and town-school facilities projects. The role requires strategic planning, strong budgeting skills, and the ability to coordinate across departments to ensure safety and compliance.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or 10+ years in building construction/design supervision.
• Demonstrated supervisory experience with administrative operations and financial oversight.
• Ability to read/interpret complex plans, enforce regulations impartially, and communicate effectively.

Responsibilities

• Direct Building Department operations including code enforcement and construction projects.
• Administer maintenance of Town and School buildings.
• Collaborate on energy efficiency and sustainable initiatives with other departments.
• Oversee reporting to state/local stakeholders on emissions and compliance.
• Supervise full-time staff, staffing, scheduling, hiring, and evaluations.
• Review building plans for compliance with codes, bylaws, and accessibility.
• Lead enforcement actions and coordinate with Town Counsel.
• Serve as Secretary to the Building Commission and assist oversight of activities.
• Prepare and manage the departmental budget; defend budgets before Town boards.
• Maintain records and permitting processes to reduce access barriers.
• Coordinate with Fire, Public Works, Schools, Assessors, and ZBA.
