Job summary

The Illinois Department of Transportation seeks a Bridge Maintenance Engineer (Civil Engineer V) to oversee operation, inspection, minor repairs, and routine maintenance of state bridges and culverts within a district.

The role requires PE/SE licensure in Illinois, five years of civil engineering experience, knowledge of bridge types and issues, a valid driver’s license, and the ability to obtain Program Manager and Team Leader status for Routine Inspections within 12 months.

Qualifications

• Current licensure as a Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) or Licensed Structural Engineer (Illinois).
• Five years of experience in civil engineering.
• Knowledge of bridge types, components, and bridge-related problems.
• Valid driver's license with ability to travel extensively within and outside district.
• Ability to obtain Program Manager and Team Leader status for Routine Inspections within 12 months.
• Element Level and Non-Redundant Steel Tension Member certification or ability to obtain within 6 months.

Responsibilities

• Oversee operation, inspection, minor repair work, and routine maintenance of state-maintained bridges and culverts in a district.
• Develop maintenance plans and direct inspections.
• Compile records and review preliminary bridge plans.
• Supervise subordinate personnel and ensure year-round bridge safety and compliance.
