Job summary

The Illinois Department of Transportation is seeking a Senior Bridge Inspection Technician to perform detailed NBIS inspections of bridges statewide, document deficiencies, and support load ratings and repairs. The role requires on-site leadership and extensive field work in a hybrid schedule at various sites across Illinois.

Requirements include two years of college in civil engineering technology or related field plus significant engineering experience; preferred certifications and NBIS

Position Overview

This position serves as a member of the technical team which makes detailed inspections of bridges throughoutthe state to fulfill the requirements of the National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS) and documentsdeficiencies found to support load ratings and repairs.

Essential Functions
  • Performs technical duties including instrument operation and precise measurements. Recordsobservations in conjunction with detailed inspections of major bridge structures statewide.
  • Serves as the on-site National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS) Team Leader, in the absence of the Bridge Inspection Group Technician.
  • Performs visual inspections of bridges, including the use of nondestructive testing equipment to detect damaged or deteriorated components, records and photographs deficiencies, and makes recommendations for repair or structural analysis.
  • Operates a variety of bridge inspection equipment.
  • Performs duties in compliance with departmental safety rules. Performs all duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Completion of two years of college in civil engineering technology, pre-engineering or a job relatedtechnical/science curriculum PLUS five years of engineering experience OR seven years ofengineering experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Successful completion of the Illinois Department of Transportation’s (IDOT) Bridge Element LevelInspection Class or the FHWA 2-Day Introduction to Element Level Inspection Class.
  • Successful completion of NHI 130078 Fracture Critical Inspection Techniques for Steel Bridges.
  • Extensive knowledge of IDOT Bridge Inspection Policy and the NBIS.
  • Ability to operate bridge inspection equipment.
  • Extensive knowledge of bridge nomenclature, ability to recognize structural problems in a variety of bridge types, and nondestructive testing methods.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Efficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and MicroStation.
Conditions of Employment
  • Requires Illinois Certified National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS) Team Leader or the ability to obtain the certification within twelve months of hire date.
  • Requires the ability to work in confined spaces and at extreme heights over land and water.
  • Requires a valid driver’s license.
  • Requires continual statewide travel with overnight stays more than 50% of the year.
  • Requires successful completion of a background screening.
