Job summary

WSP is seeking a Senior Bridge Engineer for our Reno/Carson City, Nevada office to lead structural designs on major transportation projects. You will guide complex bridge work, ensure compliance, and deliver high-quality engineering solutions.

You will provide SME leadership, mentor Nevada staff, and collaborate with NDOT and local agencies to advance transportation initiatives while maintaining safety and performance standards.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Structural or Civil Engineering is required.
  • MS in Civil Engineering with bridge focus is preferred.
  • At least 12+ years of post-education structural design experience with emphasis on bridges.
  • Experience with Nevada DOT and local agencies; NDOT, RTCs, Counties and Cities.
  • Engineer license is required.
  • Strong knowledge of seismic modeling and bridge design.
  • Proficiency with structural design software and related disciplines.

  • Manage transportation project activities and coordinate with clients and regulators.

WSP is currently initiating a search for a Senior Bridge Engineerfor our Reno/Carson City, Nevadaoffice. Be involved in projects with our Transportation Team and be a part of a growing organization that meets our client’s objectives and solves their challenges.

Provides leadership within a sector of organization to ensure structural engineering subject matter, technical deliverables, building and infrastructure projects and programs are delivered with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry and company standards for design, safety, structural soundness, and functionality. Responsible for SME innovation and administration, ensuring corporate compliance with all Local, State, and Federal engineering, construction, and safety regulations, and providing pragmatic direction to address current and future challenges in a rapidly-changing and complex business climate.

Your Impact
  • Provide proactive and strategic leadership for the structural engineering discipline and function, offering direction, expertise, and support to ensure project and work site deliverables are successfully achieved within the business sector.
  • Assist in the management of transportation projects.
  • Apply high-level structural and civil engineering techniques and processes to identify improvements for various infrastructure project phases involving more complex infrastructure, and transportation engineering work including concept development, preliminary design, final design, procurement, construction, and operation.
  • Function as a project manager and support others in managing projects that have major structures.
  • Support the overall long-term strategy, growth, and pipeline development of Structural Engineering work for WSP in assigned area of responsibility, with a focus on infrastructure opportunities in all disciplines (planning, design, strategic consulting, and program/construction management).
  • Responsible for the profitable performance of the individual projects and the successful completion of the projects within the specified area.
  • Assist with the preparation of an annual update to business tactical action plans within the specified
  • Perform professional structural engineering work and conduct more complex/comprehensive investigations and inspections of proposed and existing site conditions, resources, transportation channels, and operations to determine conformance with applicable rules, standards, and construction or operating permits.
  • Plan, organize and supervise engineering activities on bridge/structures projects.
  • Schedule engineering discipline meetings, providing updates and recommendations to ensure that all reasonable and proper measures are taken to inculcate discipline expertise and innovation into
  • Develop construction plans, specifications, and cost estimates; preparing construction safety and phasing plans, and updating infrastructure layout plans that require coordination with owners, other disciplines, sub-consultants, and clients.
  • Involved from project inception to completion in the management of design, new construction, rehabilitation, and remediation of infrastructure projects, ensuring durability of materials and structural soundness from loads and pressures caused by environmental or human influence.
  • Serve as one of the engineering discipline’s lead representatives/liaison to a variety of external entities including Federal, State, and Local Agencies, Clients, Subcontractors, industry-related groups, and various government and community entities.
  • Provide innovative solutions related to the design of bridges, transit structures, and other significant structures required for state highways, county roads, and city streets.
  • Coordinate with the district structures management team.
  • Lead larger-scale structural engineering projects ensuring contributors know what they are required to do and by when, preparing and overseeing relevant project budgets, monitoring external events, tracking hours and expenses, ensuring satisfactory performance, and supervising subcontractors, contract work, and employees.
  • Assist with and assure that engineering services are commensurate with professional standards, client requirements, budget control scheduling, cost engineering/control, quality control, and project objectives.
  • Provide verbal and/or written inputs to multi-disciplinary project teams and contribute to providing high level strategic advice to clients.
  • Ensure technical reports and presentations explain research, findings, and recommendations to prevent, control, restore, or address design and/or construction issues or opportunities.
  • Develop a client base for providing high level structural engineering services including identifying additional business development opportunities.
  • Maintain and continue to develop the firm’s reputation for technical excellence in bridge engineering.
  • Make recommendations on project staffing.
  • Assist in management, growth, and development the structures team in Nevada.
  • Remain current in latest structural engineering techniques and practices.
  • Collaborates with professionals from a variety of disciplines, other engineers, and infrastructure authorities on Federal, State, regional, local, and privately funded improvement and development projects, as well as proposal and business development opportunities.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Structural or Civil Engineering, or closely related discipline.
  • Preferred MS in Civil engineering with bridge-focused background.
  • 12+ years of relevant post-education experience structural design experience with an emphasis on bridges.
  • Structures project experience with Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) and other Nevada agencies; RTCs, Counties, and Cities
  • Experience managing engineering activities on structure-centered transportation projects.
  • Engineer license required.
  • Extensive knowledge of seismic modeling, assessment, and design of bridge structures.
  • Highly proficient with structural engineering principles, practices, process, design/build, and the application to project work-related issues.
  • Working knowledge of other technical disciplines, such as highway, drainage, geotechnical, and hydraulics, associated with the design and construction of public infrastructure.
  • Strong knowledge of relevant structural and civil construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
  • Highly proficient with making technical computations and calculations involving the application of engineering principles, understanding plans and specifications, and making factual comparisons to the appropriate regulations.
  • Highly effective interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing intricate ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
  • Strong self-leadership and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to effectively, persuasively, and tactfully interact with clients, regulators, project managers, and employees at all levels of the organization.
  • Works independently to provide guidance and leadership to mid-level to senior level team or project members, with strict adherence to QA/QC.
  • Advanced proficiency with technical writing, office automation, discipline-specific design software (i.e., MicroStation, InRoads, AASHToWare, MDX, PGSUPER, STADD, technology, math principles, physics, predictive models, spreadsheets, and tools.
  • Experienced with providing critical review for documents and preparing technical deliverables and plans with a high degree of complexity.
  • Well-developed critical thinking and problem-solving skills required to apply technical knowledge to reach conclusions from testing results, data collation, computations, statistical analysis and arriving at the most effective, economical, and logical solution.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness at coordinating and assertively directing subcontractors and others to consistently complete tasks safely and efficiently.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Must be flexible to a variety of schedules to meet business needs and able to prioritize responsibilities and quickly adapt to change in a pressure work environment.
  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Engineering.
  • SE Registration.
