Job summary

FM, a leading mutual insurer, is seeking a Senior Research Scientist to advance scientific understanding, develop new battery-safety technologies, and create engineering solutions to prevent thermal and fire hazards in battery systems.

You will lead internally funded research, design experiments, apply modeling tools, analyze data, and communicate results to stakeholders while managing projects from proposals to delivery.

Qualifications

• PhD in a relevant engineering field is required.
• Strong fundamentals in combustion, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and applied mathematics.
• Experience with experimental heat transfer, battery failure analysis, and high-voltage battery systems is highly desirable.

Responsibilities

• Lead internally funded battery safety research projects across multiple scales.
• Design experiments to support physics-based or empirical models and validate them.
• Develop and apply modeling tools for hazard evaluation of battery systems.
• Interpret experimental data and prepare high-quality technical documentation.
• Communicate methods, results, and recommendations to stakeholders and collaborators.
• Manage all aspects of project management, including proposals, planning, execution and reporting.
