Job summary

General Motors Company is seeking a Battery Structures Engineer within the New Products Engineering team. You will develop battery enclosure and body/frame integration concepts for advanced propulsion architectures, collaborating across CAE, Safety, Manufacturing, and suppliers to translate requirements into production-ready designs.

The role emphasizes ownership of workstreams from concept through validation, with a focus on mass, cost, manufacturability, and safety in an automotive context.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of relevant engineering experience in vehicle/battery structures.
• Direct experience with structural design for integrated automotive systems.
• Experience with production-feasible design practices (stampings, castings, extrusions).
• Ability to develop mechanical designs from concepts through validation.
• Knowledge of structural load paths, crashworthiness, durability, stiffness, and sealing.
• Experience communicating trade studies balancing mass, cost, performance, and manufacturability.
• Cross-functional collaboration with CAE, Safety, Manufacturing, Packaging, Thermal, Electrical, and suppliers.
• Strong problem-solving, communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.
• Ability to work independently and in a team.

Responsibilities

• Design and mature battery enclosure, mounting, and body/frame integration solutions.
• Translate pack- and vehicle-level requirements into interfaces for battery structures.
• Develop concepts, CAD layouts, studies, and documentation for battery structural systems.
• Support feasibility assessments and design trade studies (mass, cost, packaging, tooling).
• Own battery structure workstreams from concept to design maturation and handoff.
• Collaborate with CAE, Safety, and test teams to interpret analysis results and improve designs.
• Refine structural load paths, joints, and interfaces with vehicle systems.
• Apply DF manufacturing considerations to proposed solutions.
• Support reviews, design releases, and cross-functional issue resolution.
• Work with suppliers and manufacturing to mature designs and resolve risks.

Education

Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or Aerospace Engineering
