Job summary

Sorcer is seeking a Senior Backend Ruby Engineer to design, build, and scale the backend services for our fintech product. You will work primarily with Ruby on Rails, optimize PostgreSQL, and contribute to architecture while mentoring peers across time zones.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of professional software engineering experience with Ruby and Rails.
• Strong understanding of OO design, testing practices (RSpec/Minitest), and clean code.
• Experience with relational databases (PostgreSQL/MySQL) and query optimization.
• Familiarity with background job processing (Sidekiq/Resque).
• Experience with RESTful API design; GraphQL a plus.

Job Title: Senior Backend Ruby Engineer
Location: US - Fully Remote
Salary: Up to $180k per annum

We are partnering with a growing FinTech in the US who are looking to add a Senior Ruby Engineer to their engineering team. This is a fully remote opportunity open to candidates based anywhere in the United States. We're partnering with them to find an experienced engineer who can help design, build, and scale the systems behind their product while mentoring other engineers on the team.

What You'll Do

• Design, develop, and maintain scalable backend services using Ruby and Ruby on Rails
• Write clean, well-tested, and well-documented code
• Collaborate with product managers, designers, and other engineers to define technical solutions
• Own features end-to-end, from architecture through deployment and monitoring
• Participate in code reviews and provide constructive feedback to peers
• Mentor mid-level and junior engineers, helping raise the technical bar across the team
• Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks and technical debt
• Contribute to architectural decisions and long-term technical strategy
• Participate in on-call rotation as needed

What Our Client Is Looking For

• 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, with significant time in Ruby and Rails
• Strong understanding of object-oriented design, testing practices (RSpec/Minitest), and clean code principles
• Experience with relational databases (PostgreSQL or MySQL) and query optimization
• Familiarity with background job processing (Sidekiq, Resque, or similar)
• Experience with RESTful API design; GraphQL experience a plus
• Comfort working in a cloud environment (AWS, GCP, or Azure)
• Experience with CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure-as-code tools (a plus)
• Excellent written communication skills - critical for a remote, distributed team
• Ability to work independently, manage priorities, and communicate proactively across time zones
• Prior experience mentoring or leading technical initiatives

Nice to Have

• Experience scaling systems handling high traffic or large datasets
• Open-source contributions or a public engineering portfolio
• Experience in FinTech, payments, or other regulated financial environments
