Apple Inc. is seeking a Senior Backend Software Engineer for the Services Data Science & Analytics Platform Engineering team in Austin, TX. You will design, build, and operate backend services that form the foundation of DS&A's data platform.

The role emphasizes reliability, performance, and building platform primitives that other engineers use to scale data workloads. You’ll mentor teammates and help define the technical roadmap for data governance and scalability.

Qualifications

• 8+ years building and operating backend API services.
• Proficiency in Python or Node.js/TypeScript with async programming and type safety.
• Experience designing distributed systems with strict reliability and latency SLAs.
• Strong API design and service-to-service communication patterns (REST, gRPC, GraphQL).
• Hands-on with multi-layer caching architectures (in-process, Redis).
• Experience with Snowflake, Trino, Spark, PostgreSQL.
• Kubernetes, deployment, HPA, StatefulSets, namespace management.
• Observability with Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry.

Responsibilities

• Own core platform services end-to-end — API design, routing, caching, and data lineage.
• Collaborate with Data Engineering, Data Science, ML Engineering, Insight Engineering, and Core Engineering teams.
• Influence platform strategy and mentor engineers to shape DS&A data governance and scalability.
