Job summary

IBM Software is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer II to own and lead the design of complex backend services in a cloud-native environment. You will drive architecture decisions, mentor engineers, and collaborate across teams to ship high-impact work.

Qualifications

5+ years of industry experience building, scaling, and operating backend systems in production.
Deep proficiency in at least one major backend programming language (Java, Go, C/C++, or Python) and fundamentals in data structures, algorithms, and system design.
Hands‑on experience with distributed systems and data pipelines; understanding of consistency, fault tolerance, and performance tradeoffs.
Strong experience running services in a public cloud (AWS, GCP, or Azure), including containers and orchestration.
Comfortable with databases and storage systems (SQL/NoSQL) and data modeling for scale.
A track record of technical leadership: guiding projects and coordinating work across teams.
Strong communication and collaboration skills to align stakeholders and drive decisions.
Experience with observability and operational excellence (metrics, logging, tracing, incident response).
BS, MS, or PhD in computer science, engineering, or related field, or equivalent practical experience.

Responsibilities

Own and lead the design and implementation of complex backend services in a cloud-native, microservices-based environment.
Make architecture decisions balancing reliability, scalability, performance, and operability; communicate tradeoffs clearly.
Drive end-to-end projects from requirements through production rollout and operation.
Improve service reliability by defining SLOs/SLAs and enhancing observability; participate in on-call as needed.
Collaborate to define APIs, data models, and integration points across teams.
Identify platform and productivity improvements to raise the bar for the engineering org.
Mentor engineers through reviews and technical guidance to grow the team.
Foster continuous improvement and inclusive collaboration with high technical standards.
