Job summary

Gen in New York is seeking a deeply experienced backend engineer to own, design, and operate scalable backend services powering MoneyLion's product surfaces and partner integrations. You will work with product, analytics, and engineering teams to ensure reliability, performance, and AI-assisted development while shaping architectural decisions and end-to-end ownership.

Qualifications

• Deep expertise in Java and Spring Boot, including production-grade services.
• Strong understanding of REST API design, service contracts, and backward compatibility.
• Experience designing and evolving distributed systems with inter-service communication.
• Solid data modeling with SQL and NoSQL, indexing and query performance.
• Experience with asynchronous, event-driven architectures (Kafka, SQS).
• Strong observability: logging, metrics, tracing, and debugging production systems.
• Experience implementing testing strategies across unit, integration, and contract testing.
• Familiarity with CI/CD, containerization (Docker), and cloud-native environments (AWS, Kubernetes).
• Excellent collaboration and communication skills with bias toward maintainable design.

Responsibilities

• Take Ownership: maintain high quality via design reviews, code reviews, testing, and production readiness.
• Collaborate cross-functionally with product, analytics, and engineers to shape solutions.
• Architect for change: design scalable, modular backend systems.
• Improve Performance & Quality: strengthen reliability, observability, and operational excellence.
• Build clean data flows: create APIs and events supporting integrations and analytics.
• Lead AI-assisted development: use AI for prototyping and refactoring, validated by engineering judgment.
• Raise quality through testing: ensure test coverage across units, integrations, and contracts.
