Invaluable is seeking a fully remote Senior Backend Engineer in the United States with 5–7+ years of backend experience. You will deliver features end-to-end, improve performance, and drive backend standards in a fast-growing live auction platform.

The role emphasizes mentoring and cross-team collaboration across time zones. Ideal candidates have strong Java skills, experience with one additional language, and a track record modernizing legacy code while maintaining quality and test coverage.

Qualifications

• 5–7+ years of professional backend engineering experience.
• Strong proficiency with Java, and experience with one other language.
• Experience with legacy codebases and safe modernization.
• Strong automated testing experience.
• Commitment to clean code and pragmatic AI-assisted development.
• Strong technical judgement and ability to explain tradeoffs for long-term code health.
• Excellent communication and collaboration, across time zones.
• Experience with ecommerce or payment products.
• Experience with high-traffic consumer products.
• Experience with observability and production performance improvements.
• Experience with microservices architectures.

Responsibilities

• Build and ship features end-to-end across the platform.
• Refactor legacy areas to reduce technical debt.
• Own reliability and performance with measurable outcomes.
• Drive backend architecture and standards to improve maintainability.
• Collaborate via pairing, code reviews, and time-zone communication.
• Mentor teammates and share best practices.
• Partner with Product and Design to clarify requirements and scope.
