Job summary

General Motors in Sunnyvale, CA is seeking a senior software engineer to design, develop, and maintain large-scale backend systems and APIs that power core business applications. You will lead the technical design of distributed service-oriented and event-driven architectures, review code for quality, security, and performance, and troubleshoot complex production issues.

This role requires 20% travel domestically and a hybrid work setup (3 days in-office, 2 days remote).

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field and eight (8) years of experience as a Software Engineer or related occupation OR a Master's degree and six (6) years of experience.
• Five (5) years of experience with backend programming languages including Java and Kotlin; building and operating distributed systems and microservices architectures.
• Four (4) years of experience with RESTful APIs, asynchronous messaging, and event-driven systems; and relational and NoSQL databases with data modeling.
• Three (3) years of experience with cloud platforms including AWS, Azure, and GCP, containerized environments; CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, deployment practices; and security, authentication, and authorization concepts in backend systems.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain large-scale backend systems and APIs supporting business-critical applications.
• Lead the technical design and implementation of distributed service-oriented and event-driven architectures.
• Review code and designs to ensure quality, reliability, security, and performance.
• Troubleshoot complex production issues and lead root-cause analyses and remediation.
