Job summary

SumUp Inc. is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer for the Cologne-based Engineering team to build scalable systems powering merchant acquisition, commissions, and analytics. You will own API design, data models, and event-driven architectures.

Qualifications

• 5+ years backend engineering experience, Go preferred or typed-language proficiency.
• Designed APIs and distributed systems with clear contracts and versioning.
• Fluent with relational/analytical databases (PostgreSQL, Snowflake).
• Experienced with event-driven architectures and Kafka.

Responsibilities

• Aggregate data across SumUp ecosystem to identify acquisition drivers.
• Define API contracts, schemas, and integration patterns for teams.
• Build Lifecycle Event Log for merchant lifecycle events used across systems.
• Develop internal back offices and APIs for sales monitoring and dispute resolution.
• Ensure testing, observability, and incident response are built-in.
