Job summary

SumUp in Berlin is seeking a backend engineer with a strong Go background to design APIs, data models and distributed systems powering merchant acquisition, commissions and lifecycle analytics.

You will build scalable services, collaborate with data and frontend teams, ensure testing, observability and incident response, and embrace end-to-end ownership in a fast-paced fintech environment.

Qualifications

• Strong backend engineering background in Go or a typed-language generalist.
• Experience designing APIs and distributed systems with clear contracts.
• Fluent in relational databases (PostgreSQL, Snowflake) and know when to use which.
• Experience with Kafka-based event-driven systems and event sourcing.
• Experience with auditable, high-trust fintech or payments domains.
• Proven ability to work end-to-end in greenfield, early-stage squads.
• Strong testing, observability and incident response practices.
• Ability to translate fuzzy problems for engineers and sales stakeholders.
• Pragmatic approach; mentor others.

Responsibilities

• Aggregate data across the SumUp ecosystem to attribute actions to channels or agents.
• Define data models, API contracts, and rules to automate commission workflows.
• Build the Lifecycle Event Log with Merchant Intelligence squad for lifecycle events.
• Create back offices and APIs for monitoring commissions and managing plans.
• Document API contracts, schemas, and integration patterns for other teams.
• Establish testing, observability, and incident response practices.
• Leverage AI and agentic coding tools while maintaining accountability.
