Job summary

Talently is partnering with a growing consumer marketplace to hire a Senior Backend Software Engineer to help build the next generation of its transactional platform and external APIs. The role owns substantial backend systems and makes foundational technical decisions from design to production, in a fast-moving environment.

Based in Manhattan, NYC, this full-time position combines in-office work Monday through Thursday with Fridays remote.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of software engineering experience or equivalent impact.
• Strong backend engineering skills and recent production code experience.
• Experience designing and shipping transactional systems, APIs, or integration platforms.
• Strong relational data modeling and software engineering fundamentals.
• Understanding of concurrency, consistency, asynchronous workflows, and production failure handling.
• Evidence of owning meaningful technical work from design through delivery.
• Curiosity, a collaborative approach, and ability to learn unfamiliar technologies quickly.

Responsibilities

• Design and build external APIs that enable partners to access availability, pricing, reservations, and transaction management.
• Develop data models that support different product types, inventory rules, pricing structures, and transaction lifecycles.
• Keep critical workflows reliable through retries, timeouts, concurrent requests, and partial failures.
• Establish reusable integration patterns so other engineers can onboard partners efficiently.
• Evolve existing production systems through incremental migrations, testing, monitoring, and safe rollouts.
• Own projects from initial requirements through launch and ongoing operation.
• Collaborate with senior technical leaders, Product, and business stakeholders on practical design decisions.
• Contribute through code reviews, mentoring, and clear technical communication.

We are partnered with a growing consumer marketplace to hire a Senior Backend Software Engineers to help build the next generation of its transactional platform and external APIs. The company has an established customer base and is expanding into new product categories, markets, and partner channels. These engineers will own substantial backend systems, make foundational technical decisions, and see their work through from design to production.

This is an opportunity for a strong hands on engineer who enjoys complex problems, takes ownership, and wants a path toward Staff level impact.

Tech stack is open. We’re looking for strong backend engineers with solid fundamentals, sound technical judgment, and the ability to learn quickly. Our environment includes Ruby on Rails, Node.js, Postgres, and AWS, but experience with our specific stack is not required.

This is a full time position based in Manhattan, NYC. Monday through Thursday is in office work and Fridays are remote work.

• Experience with payments, orders, inventory, reservations, or marketplaces is helpful.
